1) Because England are the largest country in the UK and central govts primary concern, there is no desire or demand for a party whose sole purpose is to argue England's corner - it isn't needed. There is certainly no demand for English independence. The SNP and Plaid are popular because they represent underdog countries in a union and who want independence.

2) I personally don't think the SNP could just change their name, broaden their and have mass appeal. Their stance on Scottish independence is their raison d'etre. Other than that, they are left-of-centre and relatively populist. Their policies reflect the fact that Scotland was labour safe territory and so they lean to the left on their domestic policy. But there is no room for them across the UK because to lose their name would be to lose their identity and just become a poor man's Labour party, albeit with a good leader.
