EMA was the bomb. Paid for my travel to college, my food and then maybe there was enough left over for a Maccies on a Friday.

When they abolished it I had to get a job and had to skip college to fulfil the demands of the job.

Others just came to college a lot less.

It was a godsend for me, really did make a difference. My parents aren't well off so money was always tight but that little extra on top of my part time wage meant I get by.

"When I was poor and I complained about inequality people said I was bitter, now I'm rich and I complain about inequality they say I'm a hypocrite. I'm beginning to think they just don't want to talk about inequality" - Russell Brand

If he really said that then he's gone up in my estimation. This is absolutely the crux of the issue. Inequality is the benefit system of the rich. The more people live off debt, be it mortgages, loans or overdrafts, the more money gets sucked up to the top. Fed up of those at the top pointing at those at the bottom accusing them of costing them money. It's the other way round ffs.

I was lucky enough to get a full grant - I'm an old get. Faced with the prospect of £40,000+ of debt at the end of my degree, I may well have decided to look for a job at 18.

For sure, EMA was great, it really helped me with travel costs and the like. A 16 year old shouldn't have to work a part time job to afford to travel to full time education.
