I'll just stick it in here:
So one of the oldest rivalries in sport is back this Wednesday with the First Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, as England and Australia slog it out over 5 tests to get their mitts on the desired little trophy, The Urn.
In recent history England have largely been in charge of this series, something that can't be said for the other 100+ years that came before that! They've won 3 of the last 4 series, including a great 3 - 1 series win down under last time around. They go into this one as heavy favourites too, something I've not experienced following England in the Ashes, and I imagine its the same for most older England fans too. Personally, I'm still apprehensive about this one, as you can never rule out the Aussies, even if this current England side is top drawer.
Captained by this man, Alastair Cook, England have some chance. At the top of the order they have Cook himself, the man that has broken many records, and will go onto break many more, and Joe Root. Root is a young lad but is already impressing with his batting displays, he has a temperament way beyond his years, has great technique, and even has a few trick shots too. The kids so highly thought of that many are predicting him to go on and score more runs that Cook himself has, we'll see on that though. In the middle order there is the pragmatic Jonathan Trott, the man just scores runs, the maverick Peterson and the silky Bell. All different players but all have the potential to cause some serious damage to the Australian bowling attack. Wicket keeper batsmen Prior is a very talented one, and has been in great form the last few years so expect him to score runs too. The bowling attack is the best in the world. Jimmy Anderson spearheads the fast bowling side of things with over 300 test wickets, and I would argue he's the most skilful, if not the best all round, bowler in the world. He'll be backed up by the very dangerous Stuart Broad, Stephen Finn, and probably Bresnan or Onions. In the spin department Graeme Swann will be a massive threat, as these Aussies can't play spin to save their lives so expect him to get a shedful.
As mentioned above Kevin Peterson is a maverick, and splits opinion like no other. He's probably England's best batsman on form but comes with a lot of baggage. He was evicted from the test side for a while after a debacle surrounding him sending derogatory texts to the South Africans during their test series last Summer. The two parties have since made up but there is still something simmering under the surface so you hope for the sake of winning the Ashes that he behaves himself.
Now onto the Aussies, gone are the greats of yesteryear, only the Clarke remains really from the Golden generation, but boy is he some player. If any Australian will cause England problems it'll be this man. Known for his tenacity and stroke playing, this man can take any bowling attack to the cleaners. Shane Watson is the man that can make a start and not finish, making just 2 centuries in his 42 tests, despite making over 20 half centuries. The Australian bowling attack has some threats, Ryan Harris is one of the most exciting young bowlers about, but they don't have any spinner of note to threaten the English, on what will be a dry pitch this Wednesday at Trent Bridge, normally a paradise for seamers though.
Hopefully we'll see this again at the end of the Summer, some are predicting 5 - 0 to England but I'm cautious, never underestimate an Aussie.
