The Ashes 2013 Thread

I agree on Bresnan, a fat plodder who is the safe choice because he bats a little, bumble mentioned that Tremlett is back in contention, if he is and hes anywhere near his best what a superb addition that would be

I'd take a fit Goober any day of the week. Don't see it happening though. One of the best stories I've heard about Tremlett was when Shane Warne first met him at Hampshire. He went to greet him, and saw his headphone chords leading into his mouth. When he went to talk, he pulled one of them old school CD players out of his mouth! Apparently he can fit his fist into it. Hung like a ****ing horse too I'd imagine.

Quick question lids:

Flintoff - over rated?

Cult hero more than a legend in my eyes (not this argument again haha).

Stood up in the Ashes when it counted (apart from a terrible 5 nil series), but under achieved in his career. To be honest, wasn't helped by injuries, it's no surprise that someone weighing 95kg trying to bowl 90mph+ picked up so many knee injuries.

his injuries stopped him ever really honing a batting technique, he transended his sport though, and its the nature people who do to become a little overated

Absolutely amazing Test match.

Many had written off the Aussies before the first ball had been bowled, but they are street fighters in whatever sport they compete in, they will always give you a tough game and are even more fired up when they come up against the 'Poms'.

If the first Test is a taste of things to come then we are in for a hell of a series.

I've managed to get hold of tickets for the Saturday and Sunday of the Old Trafford Test. Can't wait for it to come round.

quite clearly ww1 halted our rythm, I reckon the guy who killed franz ferdinand had connections at the MCG

I'm struggling with all this British excellence in the sporting arena to be honest. When I was a boy, Englands cricketers couldn't hit a barn door, Britain had come back from Atlanta 96' with one medal, France seemed to always win the 5 Nations at England's expense, pretty much all of the British tennis players never came close to winning anything, Frank Bruno had got battered by Tyson etc etc etc

This year, Murrays won Wimbledon, Lions won the series, a Brit might win the Tour De France and we might even win the bloody ashes to boot!

I hope everyone is enjoying themselves because it's all downhill from here I'm afraid

I made a thread "Successive Summers of Sporting Success" to make a very similar point but also to have a sly dig at the World Cup next year - sadly the thread was derailed within seconds - much like Englands preparation will be next summer. Oh fickle irony, why do you tease me so.

Same for me mate I grew up watching us getting spanked by the aussies and windies all day long, probably the reason Boxing was prominent in my life is we had world class talent, even my childhood Everton memories are of playing Russian roulette with relegation

ha, bit closer than i was expecting, but there you go, if the 3rd umpire knew how to use a TV properly this wouldn't have been close. england need to sort their batting out though, compton's not amazing, but he's definitely more of a test batsmen than bairstow, suppose it's to do more with wanting a more destructive No.6 than root.

that will be the closest aussies will get to win a test in this series i believe - no offence like, aussies just aren't that good.

I can't believe we're in a situation where England are markedly better at Cricket than the Aussie's

It just seems.......wrong, somehow

same as everton being better at football than liverpool - first period in my life for such things. if england hadn't have stupidly thrown away that final against india it would have been a perfect summer for british sport
