The Ashes 2023

Its difficult. The counties invest in their grounds to get them up to test standards, and whilst I bemoan the absence of both grounds, Trent Bridge and Hampshire get them next time round. Why they always use Lord's and The Oval might be worth looking at mind. Lord's I get, but Surrey are probably the wealthiest County around.
With Lords / Oval and Hampshire all within what 50 miles of each other it is lunacy that there is no test match north of the Midlands

I dont disagree, but Trent Bridge and Edgbaston are no more than 50 miles apart; Headingly and Old Trafford the same. The ECB need 5 grounds, max per test series. There are 9 that have hosted tests since 2005. County cricket, financially, is on its arse, so the board have to share tests around.

IMO, if Hampshire get a gig, The Oval misses out. But the class ridden game will never do that. Despite only one current England player belonging to a County south of Birmingham.

Its not difficult to not have 3 grounds all essentially in the same area, its a deliberate and all too typical choice that prevents the growth of the game at a time we need to protect test cricket.

The northern stadiums also generate the better atmospheres.

No, it isnt difficult. But we are talking about an Ashes series in 2027. I would hazard a guess that the Windies, NZ, SA, Pakistan and India will tour England before then; or at least some of them. All of the grounds chosen to host those tests and ODIs etc will be sold out.

I would hazard a guess that many minor county counties get as much revenue from Elton John concerts than they do from their 4 day gates. Aus played in Bristol, (Glos CCC) the other week. Sold out. Taunton (Somerset) was sold out yesterday for the woman ashes ODI.

International cricket keeps the county scene financially alive. So it should be shared out.
