I haven't read a specific book concerning that period. If you want a little light reading on the effects of communist doctrine this is horrifyingly readable.

Lad at work sorted his finances out, arranged early retirement in 6 weeks, aged 55.
Last week diagnosed with bowel cancer. Utterly ridiculously bad luck.

I lost my grandad last month to cancer, diagnosed in the July, given 12-18 months in August, died October 23rd.
