This sounds great, but I can only see the book available in German. Don't suppose you could advise an English book covering the same period/subject matter?

I haven't read a specific book concerning that period. If you want a little light reading on the effects of communist doctrine this is horrifyingly readable.

smoked like a trooper right to the end...the only man in Germany allowed to smoke anywhere he wanted. Spoke lucidly and intelligently about the state of the nation until the last year or so, I always enjoyed listening to him.

Last week diagnosed with bowel cancer. Utterly ridiculously bad luck.

Sorry to hear that mate. I lost a mate last month as well, he was given 18 months in March, died the 9th October.
