Beautiful thisRIP la
In his defence, I think he's done interviews where he talks about it in more detail and basically said he was a vile person back then who was pretty much actively trying to kill himself. Not that that is an excuse, but I think he was in a pretty dark place. His mealy mouthed 'apology' in his autobiography was gash, basically 'I was drinking a lot at the time and don't remember what I said but I'm not racist I've worked with black musicians and I love the blues' etc.
People under the influence of drink tend to loose their inhabitions and say what they really think. I've a feeling that was the case with Clapton. In his defence, I think he's done interviews where he talks about it in more detail and basically said he was a vile person back then who was pretty much actively trying to kill himself. In 2018, Clapton stated that while he knew his comments were offensive, he wasn't the racist he appeared to be onstage that evening. "I was so ashamed of who I was, a kind of semi-racist, which didn't make sense," he said at a Q&A following a screening of Life in 12 Bars, a documentary film about his life. "Half of my friends were black, I dated a black woman and I championed black music."1976.
Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out,” exclaimed Clapton to his captive audience. “Get the w*gs out. Get the c**ns out. Keep Britain white,”
“Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands. So where are you? Well, wherever you are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country. I don’t want you here, in the room or in my country.”
He added: “Listen to me, man! I think we should send them all back.”
