The Dead Thread

Frank Borman, commander of Gemini 7 and Apollo 8 (the first humans to leave Earth's orbit and cross the translunar void) dead aged 95.

Bit of a hero of mine. He was the oldest former astronaut still living, his crew mate on both missions (and later commander of the Apollo 13 flight) Jim Lovell now holds that record.

Interestingly Borman also holds the record for the longest time spent in space without a bowel movement, when he got to day nine of the Gemini 7 flight before he could hold on no longer.

He was a real hero. I think that Apollo 8 mission is underrated in how important it was in paving the way for the lunar landings.
Highly recommend this book if you haven’t read it already:

That was absolutely horrible. Devastating.

I know it’s been written about as a “freak accident”, but I’ve been watching ice hockey for 40 years and there is something very strange/suspicious about the movements leading up to the incident.

Presumably involuntary manslaughter…. Involuntary manslaughter arises where the accused did not intend to cause death or serious injury but caused the death of another through recklessness or criminal negligence. For these purposes, recklessness is defined as a blatant disregard for the dangers of a particular situation.

Haven't read that book, will keep an eye out for it. I have a copy of Jeffrey Kluger's Apollo 8 book which I'd recommend. Agree entirely about the importance of the mission, in many ways it was more groundbreaking than Apollo 11 (which was the third crewed flight to the moon), nobody knew for sure what would happen after leaving low Earth orbit.

I'm heading to the UK in January to see my folks and I'm having a few days in London specifically to see the Apollo 10 Command Module at the Science Museum. It's the only CM not in the US. Very excited!
