Sir Alf Ramsey took Bobby Charlton off when he thought the game was won against W Germany and that released the shackles on Beckenbauer who turned that game around. He was a Rolls Royce of a footballer, supremely elegant and ooozing quality.

This is true. Also Gordon Banks mysteriously got food poisoning the day before the game and Peter Bonetti played instead. Big downgrade. If Banks played, England would have won.

Rest in peace their best player that similarly negated England's best player in that final. Seems to have had time and a nice word for everyone. So as graceful off the pitch as he was on it. Football is blessed to have welcomed him as disciple.
