You're also a bloke, living in your own hometown / country.
There is some difference between the types of joke you've used as an example and the intimidation / intolerance I've witnessed. Will readily admit that once upon a time I would've partaken in some of your jokes, I'm now far more cautious, reluctant even to make jokes on stereotype, especially if I know I haven't got a good grasp of the culture or knowledge of the individual. It is exceptionally disrespectful. With repect, your jest about Germans and no sense of humour is a good example (& I do recognise it's a joke). My multi national family includes a brother living in Germany. Some of his mates have tremendous senses of humour. Others not so much. You don't actually find out until you get to know them.

In regards to your comments re: being over defensive, I'm afraid that I can't fully agree. People need to stand up to intolerance. You should never ever blame someone on the receiving end. That said, it is evident that my defence has been antagonistic, bringing out the worst in others. Deeply concerning that it is there in the 1st place.

We are where we are, cultures are changing slowly but nonetheless are changing. It may take another 50 to 100 years before we are all pc enough not to give offence. But as I say, we are where we are and railing against it in order to change it tomorrow isn't going to happen, no matter what you believe. People are all different and you cannot move everyone to a place you would like them to be so you have to compromise and adapt. For instance, you and others call me a drunk, yet even though I have never been drunk in my life I live with the view and even promote it myself, turning it into a piece of humour, it harms no one yet gives cause for discussion or amusement. Stereotypes and views of people abound on here yet offence is rarely taken. It is easy to take offence yet requires more moral strength not to do so. So my advice to you would be not to take the easy route and not to assume that everyone has or even can achieve the same moral level that you take. Take people as they present themselves, do not look for a sleight where none exists and try to see the picture from the other persons perspective..........

What a weird way of looking at it. Like saying eventually we should evolve an immunity to being stabbed.

Give it a rethink will you, Pete.

It was a clumsy way of saying it takes time to change. It is foolish to believe it will happen overnight. How long did it take for women to get a vote, or black people to be able to travel on the same bus as a White child in America. What would be nice is one thing, what will actually happen is another......

You do realise it's 2016 and not the 1960s

Did anyone see Cameron on Sky news? It's no wonder he tries to avoid debates.

I agree with you on this point. People shouldn't be offensive to be offensive unless they know the person well enough for them to know it will be seen as a joke and not something more sinister.

However it's the faux politically correct people who use it to shut down debate that I have a problem with. If you are being honest with yourself you will acknowledge that's just as much if not more of an issue as what you talk about.

e.g. People making negative comments about how Political Islam treats gays, women, Jews or even other minority cultures and then calling that Islamaphobia. The Muslim Brotherhood popularized the phrase Islamaphobia and look what they did when they took power in Egypt. It turns out those people had every right to be fearful.

It's almost like people feel the need to defend their "tribe" no matter what from attack from the outside. The problem is that only fuels division and it's this division that leads to racism and poor race relations.

I tried, evidently it didn't work.......just carry on as usual.......
take no notice mate, see you at the over 50s klan bake will buy you a jug of moonshine and we can keep warm by the fires of the burning cross.
Jaycee ma cant do us a mean bit of toast on a fork when it cools down a bit and he can play his banjo and we can howl at the moon while drunk.

Identify the help we got. The likes of Albania and the Balkans have done nothing but cause trouble in Europe. However you dress it up, we are a completely different people in terms of culture and adhesion to the rule of law. To ignore this is daft. If you think it's such a good idea then invite an Albanian male to live in your house, and let us know how that works out........

I'm in Slovenia now. A stunning country full of friendly (mostly) English speakers.

Was stood on the border with Austria and Italy yesterday and strangely could barely tell the difference.

I'm sure silly nationalism has its place though.
