Its all about buying and selling at the right price, and if you can put a top quality team on the field with a low net spend, surely thats good business

Totally agree with this, however we need to qualify this statement with the likelihood that football and transfer values are just about to go through another inflationary period as broadcasting revenues increase collectively by 70%.

Now Everton may benefit financially by selling their best players in 2 or 3 years time (I obviously do not advocate this) but the idea that you can constantly balance the books with player trading and improve the squad at the same time in an inflationary period leaves no room for error and in my view is extremely unlikely.

@Bluesnapper - my point was simple, the value of the dispoed of fixed assets was circa £10m. You're trying to make out that it's a critical factor in our current predicament, when the current reality is that £10m is about 1/4 of the current market value of one our young stars. It's no longer a stat that holds any real relevance, irrespective of your view of whether it was the right call at the time or not.

Fair comment and wouldn't advocate selling out best players, unless we were financially able to improve the team out of the proceeds or from another source. This seems to me to have been the MO at Everton in the past, despite those that cry 'we always sell our best players' we always seem to finish up with better quality in the team overall...off the top of my head the Rooney and Lescott sales certainly led to an improvent in the team, and surely this is the bottom line. Even the Lukaku purchase was directly as a result of the TV money coming in, or more likely because Bill knew Moyes/United would buy Fellaini. Who would you rather have in our squad...Fellaini or Lukaku...that surely is a no brainer. A simplification, I know, but the be all and end all of how to conduct transfers to your clubs advantage, which is the whole idea.

Joey...I've always thought that the only thing that matters is the value(call it 'quality' ) of the team that goes on the pitch. There is not a league table that matters for 'net spend' Only the usual teams...City, United, perhaps Arsenal and Chelsea will have large net spends this window, apart from those spending their Vibrac style borrowings or a proportion of their tv money. Are there many of the players who have moved for 10-15 million would you have genuinely wanted at Everton ?
Just this summer

Cech
Alderweild
Schweinstiger

Let's throw in Ayew from Swansea on a free as a bit of a bonus

I don't see the point youre trying to make quoting those random transfers. Please explain. .

Oh come on now this is just silly

But we're not. We're not because the board are crap and can't find any decent income stream other than Tv - which we don't even see go in the pot because that dough's already spoken for. We're still tied to the deal with chang that gregg procured for us many moons ago, because they are either too lazy, or more likely, incapable of finding us a better one.

Err.........Make your mind up, Tv dough? Or Fellaini? And then think once more about the arteta, jelavic & anichebe dough.

Who would you rather have in our squad...Fellaini or Lukaku...that surely is a no brainer.

Rather we were well run enough to have both - no brainer.

Not the be all and end all, at all. All clubs do it. Other clubs of a similar stature to ours have decent enough income streams or investors to get by & keep hold of their top & better players. We have neither.

The team we put out last weekend was superior to the vast number of teams in the league. How did we achieve that miracle if what we do is so wrong?

Time for the petty point scoring to stop lads.

By all means present your opinion on the Board but there's no need for the petty stuff.

Anymore and thread bans will come in. Thanks.

Is this a veiled: 'know our place' thing? Be grateful we won at Southampton? 6th will do? I do hope not. One win isn't a panacea y'know?

With better running of off-pitch matters, the team could be superior to a few more teams in the league. We're doing ok (And ONLY 'ok') despite the board - not because of them.
