Maybe our vast array of terrible centre backs and centre mids will somehow translate into goals and clean sheets.
As Dyche said: we need our forward minded forwards to contribute goals and we need to make use of our set piece situations.

There's plenty of examples down the years of teams playing without a target man and getting at opposition teams and making it their own style of play.

Doucoure scored 17 for Watford, Garner scored 4 for Forest on loan last season, Gueye scored 6 for PSG, Gray has scored 8 since arriving last season, Iwobi has scored 16 PL goals, Maupay scored 26 for Brighton, Tarkowski has scored 8 PL goals and Coady 7.

Us in 2004/05 with Bent up front. Ironically when we tried to use Beattie as a target the results were mixed.

Gray up front with Doucorre in the Cahill role?

That's the way we need to be thinking yes. I mean, if DCL was avaialble every game we'd see him struggle to get 2/3 goals in the last 16 games. His impact is purely his ability to hold up play for deeper lying players to move up the pitch. Maybe Simms does that for us too? The derby was a harsh test for him.

Yeah, there’s no one in the squad who can do Dom’s hold up play but it’s not like he’s the complete striker, his finishing on the deck is pretty average and his purple patch was mostly about service.

Instead of dwelling on the parts of his game we can’t replace we’ve just got to focus on what our players can do. For example from what I’ve seen at Hearts and Sunderland Simms is a better, more composed finisher than anyone else we have: DCL doesn’t score the goal Simms did in the Scottish Cup semi for example. So give him better support and get the ball quickly into his feet and maybe he’ll get a few goals that Dom wouldn’t get, even if there’s other stuff he doesn’t do as well.

We love doing step 1. That’s the issue.

As they say, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The clubs a basket case and not one of them will leave the club willingly but will keep throwing managers and dofs under the bus.
Yes you are right thats all we do - we place too much emphasis on a singular figure overseeing the success of the club without the underlying infrastructure to support any success e.g. an identity, a style of play through the age groups, academy graduates, player trading net profit and of course, off field commercial success. It’s all tied.

All of those latter aspects are largely overlooked by the powers that be but that’s why this time feels different. There has never been so much scrutiny on the board and their performance, from supporters or the media. Thats why I think step 2 will take place (my guess would be summer) and because of the MSP investment which by all accounts will act as an enabler for the remainder of funding for the stadium. Once that’s in FM potentially sells up….I think step 2 and 3 are inextricably linked. Just my speculation, I have no evidence or knowledge to base it on…..I could be being overly optimistic.

So we're going to go all modern and play with a false 9?
