Seriously. Time is running out (Newcastle and QPR games). I really do not understand what you mean by long term success. If you can't win a trophy, it will not be considered as a success is it? Moyes had bought stability to this club in the last decade but I bet some people do not consider it as long term success. And you are calling for long term here. No one can predict what happens next. Martinez has a v good season last year but this year is absolutely dreadful.

No arguments that this season has been poor. And I agree, 'long term success' is up for discussion, and failure to provide something like it probably means a new manager. I just meant that one good season, one bad season isn't itself enough to deliver a authoritative verdict. Ok, if the club were to be relegated that would be a whole new ball game - but that's not what you were talking about in your post...you said survival + failure to win EL = sacking.

As for what counts as success at Everton, that's a funny one. Which other clubs have a huge chunk of fans who feasted on some golden years, and enjoyed the highest standards, and another chunk of fans who've never seen silverware. I mean, what expectations do West Ham fans, or Aston Villa fans have? What defines 'acceptable from the manager' for them? I've no idea, but something tells me there'll be differences from us.

Last thing I'd say is that good managers learn. I think Moyes was a better manager by the time he left than in his early years (despite some having him down as a one trick pony/hoofball merchant circa 2006). I'd like to think Martinez (very similar age to Moyes when he arrived) will do the same. Learn. Be a bit less nice, a bit more savvy about how to get results. Whether he does or not is up for judgment too, but it's hard to form a judgment unless there's enough data in...

Matthew 5:22
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘Hey, Megahead!' will be liable to the hell of fire.

It was great to see the highlights of the championship winning season again & brought back a lot of great memories. I must admit that I'm now in the couldn't care less about Martinez group as we just keep losing and playing crap in the league. If he wants to change things then rather than signing Tom Cleverley we need to sign a leader as Jags isn't one, I like him as a player but not as a captain.

I think Shawcross would be a decent signing and he would get in the players faces if things go wrong and the only other one I can think of would be Wayne Rooney as he would sort things out but that will never happen. How many leaders that are worth a place in our team & affordable are around? In 85 we had a strong spine to the team and 3 leaders, Ratcliffe, Reid and Gray which gave us a great team. The next 4 games are so vital to this club & Martinez as we can't carry on losing games.

Fair comment. The only thing we all need to know is we simply can't afford to go down. Everton just cannot relegate.

The same squad Moyes walked away from saying he couldn't do anything better with.....well, Martinez has had a double there with his highest points and European run.

Are you sure? Lukaku and McCarthy? Over £40m worth of players in just them 2 alone. Then there was Barry. When did Moyes ever get the chance to improve the squad this much in one go during his tenure?

Moyes broke the transfer record three times in two and a half seasons: Johnson, Yakubu, Fellaini (£35M)...and that was back in 2006-2008 before the massive price inflation of today.

Let's not run away with the notion he had nothing to spend in comparison to Martinez. That's just not true.

2 and a half seasons isn't comparable to 1 summer transfer window though. Anyway my point was the op said Martinez did what he did with the same squad when it clearly wasn't.
