It's because the Olympics are basically worthless these days. Once upon a time a medal haul like that would have been cause for massive national celebration, but now many look at it sideways wondering how much is achieved fair and square. And the fact that the whole of organised sport has been reported as corrupt to the core and the competitions they put on are just massive personal and corporate bonanzas doesn't help either.

American Olympic coverage is just jingoism, which I tend to distrust. I'm more interested in the individuals in the Olympics rather than whatever nation decided it's self-worth and prestige was predicated on how much money it can pump into athletics.
