The GOT Book Club

That was A Quiet Flame, I think. He's done at least six since then and there's another coming out this year.

Of course the whole premise of the thing is absurd but instead of worrying about all the famous historical figures Bernie keeps running into, you have to just accept it as entertainment and wallow in it.
Six ! What year is the latest one set, and is it still set in Germany ?

Well The Other Side of Silence came out last year and finds Bernie post war in the south of France dealing with Somerset Maugham the writer. In 2015, we had the Lady From Zagreb which was partly in wartime Berlin and also Switzerland. Bernie is working for Goebbels! Kerr jumps about a bit in time and the novels are not consecutive. That means they can be read as stand-up books not in any particular sequence.

Cheers, will have to catch up !

Try her on The Passage (there are two more in the series if she likes it). Not zombies, but similar scenario.

The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin is the best of the lot.

It's currently being made into a series with Ridley Scott and the author collaborating.

It was in initially going to be made into a film, but Cronin is such a perfectionist, that he insisted that hardly any of the story from the three books was chopped for the film.

This would have made it impossible to make the film, as it'd be hours long.

The series is going to be on Netflix and if they get it right, it has potential to be one of the biggest things ever to hit the telly.

Just finished this, book one of four.

Fictional journal of the survivor of a future Apocolypse, that may or may not include zombies.

Only 131 pages long, really easy read and captivating. Tailor made for a film.

Just ordered the other three.

130-ish pages in the 0.5 and 600+ for book 1 - both at €0.99 - can't really go wrong. Thanks for the tip.

They aren't the usual apocalypse books.

More a study and thoughts of the people writing the journals - " what would I do in this situation ".

Actually quite thought provoking .

I'll have to let the wife know about this, she's zombie mad.

If she likes Zombie books have a look at these books for her too :

The Scattered and the Dead. ( book 0.5 / book 1 / book 1.5 / book 2 )

4 x books written as journals by survivors of an apocalypse.

Very good read and again, they are thoughtful and reflective, rather than blood gore.

I read another great Zombie book, written by a Spanish fella.

The survivor just holed up in his gated compound until he got bored and then went out killing as a trophy hunter.

I'll see if I can find the title / author.

J L Bourne's books are the best on the market for the Zombie genre , pity he's a tit!

Bit of an end of the world apocalypse scenario thing? She's all about it.

Was going to mention The Passage. Just reading book 2, about half way I think. Really good, but a bit confusing as they are so long I forget things that have happened that the author comes back to a book later! A series could be amazing. Thought that it would be a bit much for a film when it got talked about in here before. Simply too much going on with too many different people. Might actually have to sign up to Netflix tho :|

Book 1 of The Scattered Dead is 99p in e-book format here on Amazon: Amazon product ASIN B01DOHSK1Q

I've been reading all the Bernie Gunther books by Philip Kerr. All about a wisecracking Bogart type private Eye in Nazi Germany. Not a recipe for laughs you would think but it's so well written and so interesting vis-a-vis the history of that era that you can't put it down. Some of them are better than others. The best are set in darkest Berlin.

Kindle edition of the first book in the series is also 99p on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/March-Violets-Bernie-Gunther-Thriller-ebook/dp/B01CD2AN72/ref=la_B000AQ3KZ6_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1487601678&sr=1-3.

They really are giving me a lot to read with their cheap ebooks :)

I've got the third book from the Passage trilogy reach to go - City of Mirrors.

However I'm going to go back and read the other two before I read it, so I'm fully up to speed for book three ;)

Ps - currently half way through the second book from the Scattered and the Dead books.

For your info - They number - book 0.5 / book 1 / book 1.5 / book 2 in that sequence x

Pps - The sequel to World War Z is due to start filming.

That'll take you a little while won't it? How much reading do you get to do?

Why do the number it like that? Would be so easy to miss the first book!

Some other Kindle bargains I've come across on Amazon:

Amazon product ASIN B01ERH6DZM - No idea who he is, but apparently he wrote King Solomon's Mines, which I recall loving as a child.

Martin’s epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Hedge Knight chronicles a young squire as he travels the cruel and complex path to knighthood in the Seven Kingdoms.

Michelle Paver - Thin Air
Ghost story set in the Himalayas as some good chaps try to conquer a peak that has taken many lives. Excellent
As was Dark Matter, her previous ghostly outing set at the North Pole, really really scary!

I've no idea why they've chosen to number the books like that, but it nearly caught me out, as I originally went to order book one before I looked at the order in sequence. The first book being 0.5

I try to aim for two to three books a month, depending on what I'm reading.

The first five or six are consecutive from memory. All excellent.

Just finished the second book in the Scattered and the dead series.

Much longer than the first one - 600 pages and not quite as good.

It wanders a bit and could've done with being 300 pages rather than 600.

Follows as similar thread to the first one, except it follows several people before and after an apocalypse, rather than just one person.
