The GOT Book Club

Just finished 'The Innocent Man' ... a non fictional John Grisham book telling the true story of Ron Williamson who was wrongly convicted of murder after a major miscarriage of justice and spent 12 years on death row.I thought it was a great read...a real eye opener to how corrupt small town American can really be.

finished this at lunchtime today.it was the second time reading it as it was a few years ago that i read it but watching narcos again i dug it out.enjoyable and easy read.you would have swore that no more cocaine would come out of colombia when he died.some waste of life and money to catch one man who there is no shortage to replace him but hey thats ok america just another country you pissed on.maybe look inwards rather than outwards.

Having drank copious amounts of alcohol on a regular basis for over 25 years I started reading this 15 days ago. Im 60% through the book and am not remotely interested in drinking again already. In fact, anybody that drinks alcohol is an absolute idiot.

I've finally got round to reading Game of Thrones...

So, I've got to ask... why is it actually, legit dreadful? Has everyone took massive blows to the head before reading this or something?

I haven't watched the TV series but it looks alright from the snippets I couldn't avoid, so I'm not being contrarian here as I was genuinely interested to see what the buzz was about, but bloody hell is this book terrible.

Do you like / read the genre in general? You can't enjoy fantasy books and credibly say the first three books are dreadful - he's too good a writer for that and the quality is not in question. Unfortunately the story got too big for him to handle, and combined with a very long lay off meant the series went to hell in books 4 (partly) and 5 (totally).

If you're not a particular fan of fantasy in general then that's a different story. The gigantic success of SoIF, though, is that it has very broad appeal by keeping trad fantasy tropes very much in the background - the books are character-driven more than anything.
