The GOT Book Club

Don't know why I was thinking of this today, but searched around and found an audio version of:

The Shepherd, by Frederick Forsyth. Tbh, I didn't know that he had written it, just that I had read it years ago in my youth. I used Google to find fiction involving the deHaviland Mosquito, and found the book and then an audio version. The protagonist has just landed....and the mystery develops.

Just finished this.

Very well researched and the author later went on, many years later, to play a big part in the posthumous lifting of the court martial of Captain McVey, the ships Captain. The victim of an horrendous conspiracy by the US Navy to pin the blame on him. To try to cover up the gross negligence of many others up and in doing so, saving face for the US Navy.

Tragic end for the captain, as he took his own life at age 70.

Was that ship to do with the atomic bomb?

The very one - the USS Indianapolis.

It was sunk on the way back home, after they`d dropped off the first bomb that was dropped on Horishima.

The Navy quite simply " overlooked " that it was on it`s way home and had no idea where it was when it was sunk.

The cover up and subsequent court martial is as fascinating as the actual sinking.

The journey to drop the bomb off was top secret, the journey back was supposed to almost be a pleasure cruise.

The sailors getting picked off by sharks is true, but it`s quite down played, which I`m assuming is out of respect for the survivors and the families of the dead.

More died from exposure, going mad / drowning themselves, from drinking saltwater and their injuries, than actual shark attacks.

I'm reading Desperation Road. Incredible book about, well, desperation. Takes place in rural Mississippi involing various characters with shady pasts, but all trying to deal with their inner demons and make things right. Great read...really compelling. Page turner, and you can get a copy cheap on kindle.

Used to love Frederick Forsyth's books as a kid, read quite a few of them, starting with The Fourth Protocol iirc. Been ages since I last read one tho, will have to look out for some.

Thanks, like the look of it very much - on my list ;)

I've finally got round to reading Game of Thrones...

So, I've got to ask... why is it actually, legit dreadful? Has everyone took massive blows to the head before reading this or something?

I haven't watched the TV series but it looks alright from the snippets I couldn't avoid, so I'm not being contrarian here as I was genuinely interested to see what the buzz was about, but bloody hell is this book terrible.

Get in the bin Tubey ffs
