The GOT Book Club

I'm reading Desperation Road. Incredible book about, well, desperation. Takes place in rural Mississippi involing various characters with shady pasts, but all trying to deal with their inner demons and make things right. Great read...really compelling.
Followed your advice and really enjoyed this one - a must for those here who like southern noir crime like Daniel Woodrell, James Carlos Blake or James Sallis.

Book one of eleven.

I’ve posted on this author before and I’ve been hammering his books recently.

Best described as “ Scottish Noir “.

This is the first book of eleven, crime dramas that centre around D/S Logan Macrae in Aberdeen.

As good if not better than Rebus, which is some doing.

Dark, brutal, exceptionality well written, with a massive vein of ultra black humour running through all of them.

I’ve been reading them back to back in sequence, they really are that good.

( not for the squeamish though )

My wife was always banging on about one of his books - Half head. Never read any myself

It's brutal stuff I agree. Bit like being an away fan in Aberdeen in my experience!
I'm not crazy about Rankin. Probably because coming from Edinburgh myself I'm a bit possessive about the place.

Considering he came into writing late and has no formal training, his books are standout.

I`ve read five out of the eleven on the bounce so far and I`m in no way bored.

They really are very good books, but the subject matter of the first one isn`t for everyone - child serial killer.

This then sets the tone for the rest of the books.

He also does "individual "spin off books, where the focus is on one particular Detective.

May be worth giving one of the spin offs a go first ?

How detailed/descriptive are the books? Sound interesting but don't fancy anything too dark, especially as I normally read before going to sleep! :o

I`ve never been to Aberdeen, but the picture the books paint, gives you a very good idea what it`s like lol
Although born in Liverpool, i actually grew up in Aberdeen due to parents and the whole oil buisiness thing, basically it's cold, very grim and there is not much to do up there, Aberdeen FC's stadium is right down on the seafront so it's bloody freezing when you go watch a match even at a decent time of the year, if you are stupid enough to go in the middle of winter you need a ski suit on lol
