The GOT Book Club

I read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 recently.

Both good but i thought 1984 took a while to get going and had a bit of a lull towards the end which made it less enjoyable than it could have been.

Fahrenheit 451 was odd though. I expected it to be about Moyes getting all hot and bothered when someone suggested an alternative formation but it was about a fireman who burns books! But yeah, i liked that one more.

Superb books! If you really like the dystopian genre definitely read Brave New World and A Clockwork Orange if you haven't already. Maybe Handmaid's Tale as well?

I prefer to read it in one go, especially the first couple of times. There are some brilliant characters completely over looked for the films, I often think I'd rather there were 6 films closer to the books than 3, sometimes so far away from the books.

As a big LOTR nerd I wouldn't have objected to this.

If anyone is into Roman history, Conn Iggulden's series about Caesar is brilliant. Dramatised and tweaked here and there for entertainment' sake but still a cracking read.

He did a Ghengis Khan series too that was brilliant.

You might enjoy Simon Scarrow's stuff, I read that and I keep getting recommended Conn Iggulden.

are most people here still physical book readers? or ebook readers? I'm virtually 100% kindle now.

Physical book, I'm almost completely digital music wise but can't bring myself to abandon physical books (although I once thought that about CD's). I just really don't like the page turning or scrolling action on any of the e-readers, its too slow and seems to me that it disturbs the flow and my eyes have to re-find there place on the page.

If you like Crime thrillers mate I can recommend Child 44 (Tom Rob Smith), set in 50's Russia, I don't normally like crime thrillers but loved this

That was good, for those who like things dark also try 'Bloodman' by Robert Pobi, although it does seem to be one that splits opinions.

Physical books, I've only just got a laptop I'll catch up slowly on the tech stuff some day. Many of my books were gifts and I would find it so hard to get rid of them. They connect me to prople I love, some no longer with us. I can see the benefits of e-readers and may get one in the future.

I Really liked it, it's not your usual book and could be taken as separate stories but they're linked and you find out how towards the end

I've just finished Cloud Atlas, and thought it was OK. The link seemed pretty flimsy to me and it did feel more like a series of short stories, the future based one being the most engaging for me.

I still own all of my books. my favourites are also on my kindle. some books, such as those on photography just don't work in a digital way.

Yes Mate, read all of the Simon Scarrow's Centurion series and also Warrior of Rome Series by Harry Sidebottom ... I've read one of Igguldens Ghengis books, Atilla by William Napier is also excellent
How do Igguldens books compare, I've read all of his Caesar and Ghengis Khan series but nothing by Scarrow, Sidebottom or Napier?
