The GOT Book Club

A good football related book. I can recommend: THE FAR CORNER by Harry Pearson. Very amusing book and well written.

It is about the experiences of the author attending various games in the North East. Mostly league clubs but also some non-league clubs. Each chapter is unique and covers a specific game. The format is, roughly, going to the game, the game, and travelling home. Some really amusing bits. I have had the book for several years and still open it up randomly and read a chapter. Still makes me smile even though I have read it dozens of times before.

Think there was a TV drama about him on BBC years ago. They used the title 'The Antiques Rogue Show' lol
Yeah, that was about him i have not seen it though. Perhaps a more fascinating character was Hans Van Meegeren, he was around during the second world war and when the Nazi's were looting loads of artworks he forged a load of Vermeers(very realistic religious paintings and not easy to forge) and sold them to the Germans. He got caught and sent to prison and is mainly famous for the fact that during his trial he showed how easy it was to paint a Vermeer in the courtroom within a few hours.

Most of the way through The Largesse of the Sea Maiden, Denis Johnson's last book of short stories - had it on the shelf all year. Two masterpieces and two I didn't really connect with - had to adjust my expectations a bit as I was sort of thinking it would blow the doors off like Jesus' Son, but that was written 25 years ago. This is a far quieter, more reflective collection and pretty sad, with one semi-autobiographical piece on a writer close to death.

Just reading another football book: WHEN FOOTBALLERS WERE SKINT by Jon Henderson. Its about footballers who played when there was a maximum wage. Top players earning £14 per week which was pretty close to the average wage. Should be a mandatory read for all today's pro's.

Finally finished Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Given that he wrote them over a period of about 30 years, you can see how his writing developed. I found them to be amongst the best and the worst of his writings - and very self indulgent at times. The last book has left me an emotional wreck but also a little disappointed at the ending in Roland's part of the story.

An outstanding book, couldn't put it down.

Set in the Deep South, as all his books are.

The tale of a man fresh out of jail, who's path crosses that of a single mum and her child, who are on the run.

As good as Cormac McCarthys - No Country for Old Men and reads very similar.

Recommended.

Definitely a good one. Read that and The Heavenly Table this past summer.
