The GOT Book Club

Fancied a change of pace from some of the more heavier books I've been reading lately so went with these:

They're just as good as I rember them, books like these are why I love SW EU. They add so much to the films and yet are still brilliant in their own right.
KW Jeter is a pretty serious writer, written a lot of steampunk stuff that's well rated - was a protege of Philip K Dick. Didn't know he wrote Star Wars stuff but I bet a lot of those type of series have skilled writers behind them.

Just finished this, if you can get past the fact the author is a RS and they sorta get mentioned as examples in the book more than they should, this is a cracking read on what goes on behind the scenes of player transfers, agents, clubs, player contracts, how players are valued, etc. Even explains why the famed 'paid for himself in shirt sales' angle is a load of garbage.

For £10 it is well worth getting.

Another cracker from the Midwest American noir genre.

The Heavenly Table - Donald Ray Pollack.

Set in the early twentieth century, follows the fortunes of three brothers who tire of life as farmhands and following the death of their father decide to become bank robbers.

Ultra dark humour rubs all the way through it, beautifully written and would make a brilliant film.

It’s incredible that Pollock was a blue collar worker for decades before tuning his hand writing.

This was the book that turned me into Pollock. Brilliant stuff

Also reading The Land Breakers by John Ehle (he also wrote Trail of Tears). A fiction novel about settlers arriving in what is now West Virginia. Really terrific writing and characters. Not sure where the plot will lead but the writing is very appealing.

Another cracker from an American author :

Chiefs - Stuart Woods.

Follows the lives and careers of three overlapping Chiefs of Police In a small Deep South town, will with an undetected serial killer in their midst.

Very well written for a first time book.

Just finished 'When Footballers Were Skint' by Jon Henderson. Worth a read. He quotes Tony McNamara who complements Everton on standing by him more than half a century later. He says 'I have two false knees now and to give Everton their due, it was they who paid for me to have them done. When the club found out that I was struggling, rather than let me go on an NHS waiting list they looked after things for me. That's one thing about Everton, they look after their former players.'
