Really enjoyed the first law trilogy but found the ending a bit bleak and empty, fantastic characters...any of his other books recommended?Less then a week to go until the new Joe Abercrombie book is realised. Cant wait to read this! If it's even half as good as his earlier First Law work then it'll be a book of the year candidate!

I actually loved the ending personally but I can see why you felt that way. Imo Abercrombie built a very grim world and it would of been unfaithful to his creation had he given the series a typical happy ending.Really enjoyed the first law trilogy but found the ending a bit bleak and empty, fantastic characters...any of his other books recommended?
Think I'll get on that Abercrombie one right away - love his stuff. I've not actually read Red Country (although I have a copy) as it was just too much Grimdarkness after the first two - is it any good?I actually loved the ending personally but I can see why you felt that way. Have you read the stand-alone books that follow up on the main triolgy set in the same world? If not, then you're in for a great read. There's three of them and they're all boss. 'Best Served Cold' is the best thing Abercrombie has ever written imo and both 'Hero's' and 'Red Country' are also brillaint. Even his sort story colletion 'Sharp Ends' is great. I'd defo recommend them all along with his separate 'shattered sea' triolgy.

I wouldn't say it was quite as good as the first two stand-alones TBH but it's still very good. Its worth a read just for more Nicomo Cosca imo!Think I'll get on that Abercrombie one right away - love his stuff. He's swerving Manchester for some reason in that tour or I'd go and see him - believe he went to university here so maybe hates the place!
Strangely enough I'm just re-reading Harry Turtledove's The Guns of the South. Also recently finished "Superior" which is a quick read about the history of scientific racism. I was mostly familiar with the content as I teach a class on this stuff, but it is a great little book and I'll likely assign it to my students.

I also am just starting "The Thin Light of Freedom" which is book recounting the Civil war in the USA in 1963 in the Shenandoah Valley. Good so far, if not heavy on detail. I'm reading it because I have a poor knowledge of US history and also I live in the Shenandoah Valley so it's interesting to read about all the towns/battlefields right outside my door, so to speak.

I went to the one in Liverpool one - not ashamed to say I was slightly starstruck, spent so much time basically living in the world he created with first law it was a bit surreal meeting the bloke who created itLess then a week to go until the new Joe Abercrombie book is realised.
