The GOT Book Club

Anyone read the jack ryan series ? Since tom clancy died and all these other fellas write them now they're pretty ordinary.

I thought the 1st six books Clancy wrote were superb, after those I thought he started going downhill so much so that I didn't bother with Teeth of the Tiger or anything after that.

I went to the one in Liverpool one - not ashamed to say I was slightly starstruck, spent so much time basically living in the world he created with first law it was a bit surreal meeting the bloke who created it
I was at that one to mate. He's a nice guy, not every author is as happy to sign everything you up infront of them as he is. I've seen him a couple of times now and he always seems to make an effort and take time with fans.

Recently finished Howard Kendall's autobiography.

A fair read from an Evertonian point of view but he (or his ghost writer) doesn't exactly write enthralling prose and there's a lot of skimming over things where a deeper look would have made for much better reading. Probably a lot to do with him being decent and not willing to take shots at others when they can't shoot back.

5/5 though because it's HK ;)

Just finished Catch-22 . This was occasioned by having seen the new filmed version (no better than the first film i.e. not great).

I hadn't read it since the 70s when I and others were constantly rereading it and quoting it like it was Python's Holy Grail or something!.

I didn't laugh quite so much this time because the darkness of it struck me as more pervasive. It's brilliantly conceived, however, and far and away better than anything else Heller wrote.

Any good ?
It's been a while since I read it. I was given Neverwhere one birthday, loved it and fairly quickly read all of Gaiman's novels as a result. American Gods is the standout but the others were all good. He's written a few children's books as well. One of them, The Graveyard book, the first chapter would scare the life out of a child. I may be making this up but I was under the impression that 2 versions of it were published, with one missing the entire first chapter.

He also wrote Stardust which was made into a half decent film.

Quite simply, the best book on the Battle of Britain...
