The GOT Book Club

Got the new Joe Abercrombie book yesterday, and got it signed to.:)View attachment 66969View attachment 66971
Anyone polished this off yet? I read it over the weekend - really fun read, the Abercrombie style in full flow. Felt like a bit of a retread, though - like I'd read all the same characters and storylines before, plus the last quarter was a bit anticlimactic.
Guess that is either a good or a bad thing - if you're looking for more of the same First Law, Best served cold goodness then it delivers. But if you wanted to see a different direction then I don't think there is one. The workers organising against the bosses, perhaps. That is my initial impression, anyhow - will see how the book settles down in my mind - be interested to hear what others made of it.

Nobel prize for literature yesterday went to Peter Handke (Austrian) and Olga Tokarczuk (Polish) - not read either but both look fairly mainstream and like you might actually enjoy their novels.
Handke wrote 'the Goalkeeper's fear of the penalty' in the 70s which was made into a film.

Am working my way through this fiction collection Hard Case Crime

Have done the first 5 books so far and they have all been very good reads, and in doing so have also found some more author collections to have a go at when I have finished the series.

If you like noir crime then its certainly worth considering

I'm reading A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon who wrote the celebrated Dog That Died novel.
It's a silly story about a family and their relationship problems but it sure draws you in. I found myself unable to put it down last night. You feel like shouting at the characters not to be so stupid but that's life, isn't it?

Awarding the prize (jointly) to Atwood absolutely stunk - like saying Man Utd finished sixth last year and were horrible, but they deserve an equal share of the title because they've put out some bloody great teams over the years. Unfair even on Atwood as she doesn't need the Booker at all and it just looks embarrassing for her.

Saying that, don't really get the thrust of that article - the publishers of Ducks, Newburyport, loved their book, obviously (1000 pages of one sentence, so sounds like a bit of a tester), and Atwood as jarg lifetime achievement award if a joke, but the judges went for Bernadine Evaristo as the winner so what can you say?
