For those who are fans of Skandi Noir - The latest Harry Hole novel by Jo Nesbo - the Knife is rather good.

With the added bonus of the fact that you don’t have to have all the other books in the series.

Readings been poor this year, too much computer gaming, but picked up an absolute gem last week - Engine Summer by John Crowley. Post apocalyptic novel but beautifully written, like a dream - published late 70s.

Very few writers at this guy's level but after early work that was praised to the skies (Little Big is his masterpiece) he got a bit lost (IMHO) writing a massive Secret history of the world called the Aegypt tetrology. Very dense, difficult work that wasn't commercially successful and took him away from a mainstream readership.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I am about 30% through volume one

all I keep thinking of with all the right wing groups that were present in the 1920's

People's Front of Judea
Judean People's Front
Judean Popular People's Front
Popular People's Front of Judea
etc

I was losing track of them all !

As far as biographies go its a very good read, hope the rest of the book is as good.

Once I finish the Hitler book I will give it a go ;)
Let me know how you get on with the locked room book, don't read when you're sleepy, you've no chance of remembering the details

Next book to start (tonight/tomorrow) finished the Hitler book, started dragging a bit towards the end, I have the 2nd volume but will read that in a month or two when I am back in the mood.

After Hitler I read The Hermit King, another good book, the only complaint is when is goes away from Kim and talks about the military (thought it was filler tbh). Kim usually comes across as a bit of a clown in the media, but after reading this my opinion of him has changed 180', a very clever and extremely brutal (obv) man.

After the Kim book I did Clarke, Goodwin and Whitely, Why Britain voted to leave the EU, Good book if you are interested in Brexit at all (both leave and remain voters would find it interesting imo). If not then swerve it.

And after that one I read made Men, If you like the Sopranos I can highly recommend this one, decent book on a mafia family that was 'loosely' connected to the New York families, some Sopranos links were very evident.

Then last night I finished Mob Star, another good book (If you like mafia stuff, which reminds me that I need to do the Godfather again at some point), not as good as Made Men though imo

Anyway, Murder in the Crooked House is next. Will let you know. ;)

Got no chance of remembering the details when awake ! am now re-reading the description of the stairs/rooms/occupants for the 2nd time (page 80~86), might have to make a diagram to help me as I cannot fathom it out.

Probably a red herring as well but gotta cover all bases, but killer got in/out someway, so it must all be pertinent that its described in detail

and on the subject of covering bases, I now have this on my phone to so when I am not reading the book I am trying to figure out how the killer got out.

Just finished Soji Shimada's bonkers Japanese locked room mystery Murder in the Crooked House
It has a helpful dramatis personae and a map of the house and who occupied each room
I still kept flicking back to both
The book is culturally very interesting and if anybody has read it i would be curious in your opinion of the outcome
Weird , just strange or simply crap. I can't really decide

Thanks for the heads up. Would recommend it if anyone likes locked room mysteries (although I can never seem to figure them out)

Although cleverly thought out, I my opinion was the method of the 2nd victim being killed was a bit too far fetched for my tastes

My guess after the first murder was it had to be someone who knew the house, so either Hamamoto, his daughter or one of the staff. Made no sense a guest would have sufficient knowledge of the place to commit the crime.
However I couldn't narrow it down any more than that.

Furthermore anytime I thought of something, hidden passages, midgets or whatever the author seemed to read my mind and debunked my idea within a few pages.

Overall its a good read (and a very good translation into English in the version I read) ;)

Now I have better look for some more 'Honkaku' books to annoy me, probably this one next The Tokyo Zodiac Murders

over yesterday and this morning I finished this one

There are a lot of books about Trump in the whitehouse, mostly showing what a circus it is. This book is different in the regard it's more about before Trump got elected and the sly tricks Cohen used to enable Trump get his own way and just generally be scum to everyone else.

Its a decent read, don't expect any big revelations, you have probably read most of whats in this book, this just gives you the inside track on certain things.

If I was to describe it, I would say its more about Cohen exorcising his inner demons for doing the things he did, rather than sticking the knife into Trump (which it does to a degree but not as bad as other books do)

I would guess that there is a lot of stories that are not in the book due to attorney/client privilege which is a shame.
