The Heatwave

this is rain for the survivors of the 1976 heatwave, proper men (women stayed inside)
I don't get this. My memory of the 1976 heatwave was its longevity rather than the severity. Went on for weeks, right across the school holidays which is unheard of. Don't remember it being excessively hot though. Would be surprised if there were more than a couple of days that actually exceeded 30C.

What we're seeing this week is entirely different and not comparable really.

i didn't even know it even existed until a few days after, i'm in awe on how much people apparently remember from it.

It was more of a drought than a heatwave wasnt it?

Doesn't bode well for the world in the next 50-100+ years really if English summers are to regularly border on 40 degrees plus. Thankfully I won't be around in 100 years and won't have any children to be concerned about at any stage. I know it's selfish, but you won't catch me 'doing my part' by turning vegetarian, cutting down on flights or just having 20-second on every once a week.

Thats essentially what 76 is remembered for, there was a two week period to which the whole country experienced 30 degree temperatures. However the summer of 1995 is actually the driest on record. Good chance that will be broken in certain places this summer as there little rain forecast for parts of the country in the coming weeks.

Should take up smoking and get a more gas guzzling car.

Ha ha. Yeah, and the fact the it’s being used as an argument for how this is normal British summer weather.

“There’s nothing unusual about 40 degree temperatures, didn’t you know it hit over 35 degrees for 5 consecutive days, 46 years ago”.

I was 15 at the time mate. Believe me, if you had the entire 7 weeks summer holiday warm and sunny, you'd remember it too. It was fantastic. A real coming of age experience you might say.
