The loan myth

Player Valuation: £40m
It seems like a lot of people think that we're loaning players simply because we can't afford to buy. I don't think that's the case. Lukaku and Deulofeu are two of the most highly-prized young footballers in world football. Chelsea and Barcelona respectively chose to entrust them to us ahead of a lot of competition from top European sides.

Martinez has said that since the start of the season he's had lots more players of a similar calibre offered to him. Why would we refuse the opportunity to watch a future Drogba or Messi in an Everton shirt even if it's only temporarily?

Moyes always used to bemoan the lack of outstanding talent in the final third. Would we rather stick to what we can afford (a Kone or a Naismith) or take a future superstar on loan?

They give us the opportunity to concentrate any transfer funds on other areas, they raise the image of the club, they make our play more entertaining and, hopefully, they teach something to our full-timers.

Ok, they will probably be going back to their parent clubs in the summer, but it was a success. So why can't we just bring another four top-notch young players in next time to help improve the side?

If we owned these players we'd be constantly fretting about them moving on to a CL side anyway. I'd argue that it's just a more enlightened way of doing things.

I am slightly worried that we have no real top striker & our midfield is being bossed by Barry when he's leaving in 2 months.

Having said that, I agree that we shouldn't say no to a Chelsea striker & Barcelona winger who clearly are on the verge of great things.

If we had won some more games, then we would have been aiming for Champions League football and then they may have even stayed (Lukaku and Barry may depending on our war chest).

Furthermore I'd hate to spend £20,000,000 on Lukaku and him end up being a flop, he's been a great signing but did go completely dead for two months before his injury. With loans, there are no risk, other than who replaces them in the Summer.

Considering the loan fee actually equates to a year's worth of buying and owning that player, and we pay their wages, I think it's savvy use of the market from El Bob. We're hand to mouth at the moment, but he's building something.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't keep Barry but, even if he does leave, Gibson is younger and could form a very effective partnership for club and country with McCarthy.

As I've said in other threads, I think that FFP will get serious pretty soon and, if Chelsea can get £20m for Lukaku to help offset signing someone like Cavani or Falcao I think they'll see it as good business. My concern would be if someone like Arsenal decided to make him an offer. If we have that sort of money available though I'm sure that we'll bring a quality forward in.

I'm not sure whether the incentive scheme that Barca have offered us, where Deulofeu costs very little when he does play is common practice, but that would help to keep our wage bill down too.

Lukaku would be lethal at Arsenal as they have creative midfielders who can thread passes for him to run onto. We just don't have players who can do that.

They wanted Ba, they have money to spend, they can offer him CL football and Chelsea will sell to rivals. He could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for them.

Brilliant!!!

Nothing wrong with utilizing the loan system each year, infact I'd say it's essential for a team like us trying to compete with such inferior finances.

I'd also say much has been made of our loan signing this season and the what we gonna do when we lose them.....

Barry I really don't count as a loan, and as long as things went ok was always gonna become perm.

Lukaku was the type of striker we prob couldn't afford but held that chance of "you never know" come season end.

Delefoe was purely loaning a future barca star who would help us out squad quality wise. Whilst also I'm sure building some excellent bridges with barca!!

Traore was simply borrowing as no one else was available to buy Right then.
