We're on a schedule and a budget with the label. We have 4 days, we have 20 songs including 9 I've written on lockdown, we have to be able to go in, lay them down quick and tight, do a few little overdubs then mix it, so we have to practice

I'm 38, in my mind this is my last chance. I wrote a good book nobody bought, if the record is the same then it has to be the best it can be. We played an amazing show at the start of march and he told me then he wanted to cut his practice time in half and since then he's been nothing but negative. He's a great player and a great friend, I'm bad at being selfish but at some point maybe I have to be.

He can still be a great mate and if he's looking to cut his rehearsal time down by half I'd say it isn't being selfish moving him along.

Like you mentioned, the windows of opportunity are very slim when it comes to music. Nothing wrong with wanting to give yourself the best chance possible and you never know, speaking to him candidly about it might be better as he might not have the same hunger as you and the rest of the lads.

A lesson learned in my own experience was to not expect everyone to have the same desire, ambition and work commitment to music as I felt. It didn't mean they didn't care, just that I cared in a different way.

I really only realised that after binning off a fair few band members over the years lol

Confession time: I feel like I've wasted 20 years not being in bands. When I wanted to be a musician and my dad told me it was a waste of time, I was promoting shows at the time and the manager of a popular Sunderland based 3/4 female indie band beat me up and took the takings and I sold all my gear and didn't even have a guitar for years.

Started this band a year ago, we played a few shows and people liked it and we got offered to make the record. I'm a writer so I've worked my arse off making these songs and my attitude now is that if you aren't in then you're out. This isn't a hobby. I know a lot of great players and performers here and several of them rate me so I have to try.

But you're right, honesty is the best policy. My plan was to get the record done and then see. The label want us to do a lot of festivals around Europe next year and he is just divorced with a kid he has 50% custody for, he doesn't want his ex to have even 1 more day than she's entitled to so I guess touring isn't happening.

Sorry for the rant.

Good evening mate.

Not a rant at all mate, nothing wrong with being passionate for something you love.

I honestly think things will work out for you mate. The things you've said about your bass player, sounds like he has a lot of things going on so when the time comes and you do sit down as a band and iron out these issues, I think you'll all find a way to either carry on together and be better for it, or maybe one person drops out but it will be done amicably with understanding.

That's the great thing about getting older..... experience. You become a better musician and your time isn't done until YOU say its done so don't put any additional pressure on yourself mate. Your in a band, still loving it, about to cut a record, absolutely buzzing for you ;)

y'

Thanks mate.

I've never been a good musician... So I have to surround myself with them. I just hear stuff in my head and try to make it reality.

The great thing for me is how the songs sound similar but different once they're finished and filtered through everybody else. The four of us have a great bond and I'd hate to lose anybody but when I was a kid I always wanted to write a book and make an album... And they have to be good!

You have a great evening!

I can relate totally to this in my own way. I'm a few months off 37 myself.

I had some minor releases when I was younger, but lacked the self confidence to really have a good go at it musically.
I sat back and watched people who used to look up to me (for lack of a better term) pass me by and become successful.
Got massively jaded with music and walked away for a long time.

I've got back into it once I dropped the obsession with 'making it'.
I'm having the most fun I've had with music and writing some of my best stuff lately just doing it for 'me' and nobody else.

I'll be sending some demo's out at some point, if they get signed, great, if not, no worries.

Not saying you shouldn't chase the dream of making it - just be aware that the obsession can be a thick fog over your creativity. Just bear that in mind.

And best of luck to you!

Thanks a lot mate... For clarity I'm not into being famous or anything, just getting the songs to as many people as possible and having fun and i'm cool. The only way I got this deal was getting the boss of the label drunk as a lord at our show and having him sign a beermat.

Let me hear your demos!
