The Music of GOT

Listened to Conventional Means - good that Prev. Be surprised if you don't list Josh Homme as an influence?

Just started playing in a band for the first time and we sound a little bit like the smashing pumpkins, without really knowing what we were going to sound like going in. I do a few acoustic covers from time to time. Here's one of an Elliott Smith song, like the original you need to turn it right up. Goodbye sweet anonymity.

Spot on that mate ;)

That's class mate, lovely voice and guitar style. Must give that song a look, I don't know much of Elliott Smith apart from the name. You and the band aiming to do live shows?

And yes, the guitar sound on Standby was defo QOTSA inspired, I probably rip from them and Muse more than anything else these days.

Cheers mate, the plan is to write at least an EPs worth of material and then start playing live, although ive dropped one or two clangers playing live solo so like yourself we’ll see how my nerves hold up!

Did you play/programme every instrument in your work or do you have a band backing you?

I think you just have to keep at it and play regularly, which is something I didn’t do. I never got comfortable in front of people and left huge gaps between shows. Had to use a click track for a few songs which was added stress.

Yeah, programmed the drums and strings and all the synths and stuff. I sound like a virtuoso piano player on the recordings but in reality I'm crap. I would just play something basic in the rhythm and velocity I wanted and then moved loads of the notes around on Midi. The only thing I got other people to play was the bass. I played it on my first EP (After the Bomb) but my hands were cramped to hell after because I was unused to the size of the fretboard. I had a newfound respect for bass players after. Oh, and it's real drums on the Conventional Means EP, got my mate to play them

Are you a GarageBand man or do you use another software? Would quite like to dot some piano and maybe a trumpet in one or two songs.

Funnily enough I’ve just started playing bass for the sake of the band being a 3 piece, having long fingers is a bonus with the chunky frets!

I use a thing called Mixcraft, it was basically garageband for Windows, though it has really developed into a great program with each version over the years. Very very simple interface but can do a lot.

Okay!

Purely because the home studio ones aren't ready yet, here's our show from Wednesday night. Hopefully the tunes shine through the crap recording.

Space travel's in my blood
There ain't nothing I can do about it

I used to play that every day but haven't in years - cheers for reminding me!

Nice gig too!

Here's a live recording of my early 70s rock band recorded at a reunion gig at the Cavern in Liverpool in November 2006. 'The Hunter', an Albert King number covered by Free on their first album.

Pretty much captures the agression we had in our youth. My solo starts at 1:42.

Only recently got back into writing music, so I don't have much to share here.

This is a little different than my usual stuff, but I'd been out for the day and had my old 90's/00's Trip Hop playlist on (Massive Attack, Zero 7, Portishead etc.)
so I came home with that style of music swimming around in my head and wanted to push myself into doing something different.

Came up with the chords and bassline to start with using a couple of patches from a Kontakt library (it's a Jazz Organ and a basic bass guitar patch that I patched through a pedal and amp cabinet emulator to give it a more realistic sound) then just built the rest around it with various samples that I chopped up, re-pitched and otherwise manipulated.

In fact, the only synth in this whole track is the little vintage sounding synth pad right at the end which was made in a Yamaha DX7 emulator called 'Dexed' (It's a free download btw if anyone is interested)

I had the idea for this remix ages ago. I really love the original (In fact this is a remix of 2 versions of the song; the melody is taken from the original album version but the vocals are sampled from the alternate version)

I wanted to make a club oriented track with vocals that are a little bit different from the usual 'dance music diva' that is the norm.
As a result it may not be to everyones tasted, but I'm quite happy with it.
