The Music of GOT

Here's a live recording of my early 70s rock band recorded at a reunion gig at the Cavern in Liverpool in November 2006. 'The Hunter', an Albert King number covered by Free on their first album.

Pretty much captures the agression we had in our youth. My solo starts at 1:42.

Spot on OB2, some fine guitar work going on from your good self ;)

The guitar thread reminded me that we have a lot of musicians on here. Not sure if there is a thread for this already but this is a place for the talented people of GOT to post their material. Pretty sure @Old Blue 2 will have something to contribute, and @mezzrow if I'm not mistaken?

This is all my stuff going back 10 years, a few EPs. I was a trainwreck of nerves on stage, so any career I might have hoped to pursue was quickly dashed after a few repeated bed-soilings, but I did like the studio and the composition element of music. Show us your tunes

Actually really like what I've listened to (Like a Machine). Sounds like You Me at Six or Funeral for a Friend(? - I'm not great with band names), but I actually might like those songs better...

Some quick questions on the stuff I posted. I'm in the midst of an almighty tangle with our bass player who is convinced the recordings sound flat and boring, whereas I think they're fine.

If some kind soul could offer me some honest feedback (even better if you've also listened to the live recordings to compare!), I'd really appreciate it.

Maybe I'm biased but to have somebody dismiss probably 30 hours of work recording everybody and mixing it with a wave of his hand is a touch irritating.

I'll have a listen now mate, completely missed this the first time around

Thanks, wouldn't bother going through the whole hour of the live show if you don't want to. Or just listen to the first song to get an idea.

It's supposed to sound a bit cheap and nasty, incidentally. It's punk rock after all. I'm more worried about if it carries the energy and punch.

How was it all recorded? Was it a live session that was miked up at once?

Don't have enough inputs for that!

Recorded the whole band live on 2 overhead mics to get the natural tempo/rhythm then had everybody play their parts to that in their headphones
4x mics on the drumkit (led zep style)
Then double tracked the bass DI and close mic
2x guitars on close mic and room mics
A couple of overdubs
Vocals.

Then a LOT of mixing

How does everyone feel about the whole band performances without overdubs?

We're undoubtedly better live, but who isn't?

I think everybody got their stuff down pretty good (even me, terrible guitar player that I am!). I was, ironically, very happy with the bass sound. Vocals I'm not 100% on. Difficult to let it go without a load of amps to back you up.

It needs more cow-bell for sure :hayee:

Forgetting about being technically correct, do the whole band performances have the right energy / punch? If so, you are either right or it can be fixed. If not...
