I thought we were going to stick to the CA forum?
PS - it's not a binary choice between the two options YOU think are the only two on the table.
I will give you credit though: you at least put forward an alternative to the current situation, instead of just just objecting for the sake of objecting and leaving us with a status quo. Problem is, your alternative plan demands that P&O supply vessels and crew for free and also that the French government allows the UK to set up processing facilities on French soil (which they've repeatedly already refused), and you didn't explain where all these people would be housed prior to processing.
I suspect in your scenario, the crossings (and therefore avoidable deaths at sea) continue. Perhaps at a reduced rate.
How much has been poured into 'French' help already, and only this week championing half a billion pounds Extra to "improve" the issue.

theres some P&O money right there.
(You presented the issue solely on the dangerous and sometimes deadly crossings, I pointed out there is a very easy way to avoid that).
If France don't fancy making a port facility available, hows the remains of the Mulberry harbour? I suspect history will prevent their objection.
"There's no room at the inn" wasn't a good enough reason to knock sweet baby jesus back, so lets convert empty office space. Hell, some of the billions on their way might have skills to utilize in said conversions. Get em in, get em working, get em paid, get em taxed.
I'd even incentivize papers, if you have ID and passport then straight to the front of the queue for you. That'll knock this "papers into the sea" myth to pot.
So
that's a no, legal and much larger crossings are facilitated, we found room for hundreds of thousands of troops in the mid 40's we can do similar now.
