The Oldies Thread

Question to us old gets and the "never did us any harm" school of thought.
When at secondary school back in the early to mid sixties, looking back, myself and others were subjected to discipline from the teachers, which today would be treated as assault.
A full on open handed slap from one of the gym teachers which sent me flying, because I hadn't brought my PE top. Another PE teacher telling us to hang from our arms from the top wall bar in the gym, while he inspected our "pumps" as they were back then, for cleanliness. If not you got a whack across the midriff from him with half a wall bar he carried with him, oh and if he caught you using your heels to support yourself, you would get another whack.
Just a couple of examples, but a general question, discipline or abuse?
Opinions welcome, and not confined to PE teachers by the way.

I went to Anfield Comp in the 1970's, where all manner of corporal punishment was dished out.

At the time we thought nothing of it, but with today's awareness, I'm sure one or two of the teachers may have had ulterior motives.

In terms of improving behavior, no evidence that it ever worked.

PE teachers were a strange breed back in the day

My lad was sitting his English Literature GCSE this morning.
The fire alarm was activated by some leavers who set off smoke canisters and the whole school was evacuated until the THREE fire engines declared it safe.
Top Bantz no doubt recorded on smart phones and on Facebook.

My teachers would have battered them.

We had a physics teacher who's weapon of choice was a piece of rubber tubing. We had a choice of what to do for games lessons, he took trampolining and the lads had to take their undies off and wear shorts and vest, he also took swimming and did a head count in the changies every week just as we'd all stripped off.

My religious studies teacher who taught me for 'A' Level (all 3 of us) was a mild mannered that you could ever wish to meet. Subsequently unmasked as a paedophile. I'm not sure that helps.
Anyway, whatever happened to string bags ?
