The summer 2013 Everton transfer rumourZ thread

I have to agree spending £5 million on an average 30 year old striker from Wigan is crazy and very short sighted from Roberto. I hope it's just rumours. We need to spend the little we have on youngsters for the future.
Precisely this. £5m should be used on youth with resale value
So your solution for us having limited funds is to concentrate our spend on the group of players with the highest degree of uncertainty and risk (youth players)?

The majority of youth players fail. I'm not saying we shouldn't sign any -- obviously you have to -- but to bury your head in the sand and deny reality does nobody any favours. 5 million on youth players you are gambling on one day being worth more is arguably more of a risk than 5m on a 30 year old you are fairly confident can do a job.

I'm not a huge Kone fan so I'm no particularly passionate one way or the other but if I'm analysing both options there are risks either way and it's hardly as obvious a choice as some of you seem to believe.

That's why I rate David Moyes so highly. The way he turned the club around and got us in to respectable league positions without any kind of real backing was a superb achievement.
It's weird you admire Moyes so much yet you continue to promote a course of action which is pretty much the complete opposite of the way Moyes built his squad. Moyes bought low and sold high on occasion; however he also bought old and tried to fight against selling players (even for a profit because he understood their value to us was higher) a lot of the time too.

Villa have had way more youth players become successful pros than we have but it hasn't done them much good because they either no longer play for Villa or they just turned into serviceable squad players who don't improve the team.

But making your first signing a 30 year old journeyman striker for 5 million is not a great start is it.
If his first signing is 16 it doesn't mean all the rest will be 16; if he's 30 it doesn't mean they'll all be 30. The "first signing" carries no more significance than the second, third or fourth.

Distin has played well, but how much of that 5 million will we get back? Nothing is the answer so it wasn't a good deal business wise.
You need to read up on risk of ruin.

Apart from the players signed that were out of contract not many major transfers have actually taken place - what is wrong with waiting out a bit more. Then if we don't get anyone there's always Segundo Castillo !!

Not bad. 31 at the end of the month and had an injury struck season. Won't add anything to the current team except more depth. But i'd rather see faith placed on Duffy.

It still kills me to see this £5-6m fee touted for Kone. We are certain to sign him. Not a bit happy with this. A lot of money spent on an old, average striker. He is going to cost as much as Mirallas did!

Please stop saying this. We got a bargain with Mirallas and definitely underpaid. That does not mean every transfer that happens from now until the end of time should be based on the price we paid for Kevin Mirallas

Every one complaining about not getting our business done early, I'm pretty sure we'd never signed 3 people in the first week of the transfer window under MoyleZ, which is looking pretty likely.

No. Mirallas is not the only bargain out there. Benteke cost Villa £7m, Michu etc. There are countless players every summer who are considered bargains. A bargain is about getting more than value for money. There is no way Kone would repay that transfer sum, he isn't good enough.

I didn't say it should be. It was a point I was making. When there are players of his quality out there for decent prices, yet we seem happy to resign to getting players not good enough to keep a team in the league.

I dont think its a case of us being 'resigned' to signing Kone, Martinez clearly wants him here, its not like he's given up on looking elsewhere, he's worked with Kone for a season and clearly rates him. And as for him not repaying his transfer sum, Van Persie cost united 24 mil as a 29 year old, they will never be able to sell him for anything like that price....but he helped them win the league, does this not count as repaying them? If Kone goes on to bang in 15-20 goals this season people will be looking at the 6 mil transfer fee as a coup
