I have to agree spending £5 million on an average 30 year old striker from Wigan is crazy and very short sighted from Roberto. I hope it's just rumours. We need to spend the little we have on youngsters for the future.
So your solution for us having limited funds is to concentrate our spend on the group of players with the highest degree of uncertainty and risk (youth players)?Precisely this. £5m should be used on youth with resale value
It's weird you admire Moyes so much yet you continue to promote a course of action which is pretty much the complete opposite of the way Moyes built his squad. Moyes bought low and sold high on occasion; however he also bought old and tried to fight against selling players (even for a profit because he understood their value to us was higher) a lot of the time too. That's why I rate David Moyes so highly. The way he turned the club around and got us in to respectable league positions without any kind of real backing was a superb achievement.
If his first signing is 16 it doesn't mean all the rest will be 16; if he's 30 it doesn't mean they'll all be 30. The "first signing" carries no more significance than the second, third or fourth. But making your first signing a 30 year old journeyman striker for 5 million is not a great start is it.
You need to read up on risk of ruin.Distin has played well, but how much of that 5 million will we get back? Nothing is the answer so it wasn't a good deal business wise.
Not bad. 31 at the end of the month and had an injury struck season. Won't add anything to the current team except more depth. But i'd rather see faith placed on Duffy.
It still kills me to see this £5-6m fee touted for Kone. We are certain to sign him. Not a bit happy with this. A lot of money spent on an old, average striker. He is going to cost as much as Mirallas did!
Tom Ince -- 8mil + Kone 5mil...
If both are true then simply spend the 13mil on a top player.
Please stop saying this. We got a bargain with Mirallas and definitely underpaid. That does not mean every transfer that happens from now until the end of time should be based on the price we paid for Kevin Mirallas

Would prefer Matty Phillips or obviously Nathan Rredmond.
No. Mirallas is not the only Bargain out there. Benteke cost Villa £7m. There are players every summer who are considered bargains. A bargain is about getting more than value for money. There is no way Kone would repay that transfer sum, he isn't good enough.
I didn't say it should be. It was a point I was making. When there are players of his quality out there for decent prices, yet we seem happy to resign to getting players not good enough to keep a team in the league.
I ask myself, how can this window be made worse? The answer. Yet another player we're going to miss out on who will go to a rival.
