The summer 2013 Everton transfer rumourZ thread

The fact that our budget (supposedly) is such a meagre sum is more of a concern for me. As for the "Wigan" players, lets wait and see how the do in an Everton shirt before we call them ****e!

I think after umpteen years of 24/7 search for a buyer, we can safely assume that us being skint is a predicament that's not going to change for some time and thus, it is simply part of the job RM took on when he came here. Like Moyes, he has to be able to work with little to no resources. This is a bumper budget by our standards. We'd all have been on Moyes' back to use it to make progress had he still been in charge.

I know you're joking about me calling our signings sh*te, so I won't address that last comment.

replacements (squad players if i may) had to be signed quickly. Why wouldnt he sign players he know to be good. If he would have waited we would be in very "thin" condition rigt now - as a team. Now we are in the situation that core is ready, if there is outs Martinez will bring new targets. If we can keep duo thats ace, and on top of that if he makes one or two signings we are is brilliant situation. win win.

You're right Finners lid. I do think for £5m and (supposedly) £50k a week we could have done better than a 29 year old Kone. Or at least tried to. If we had just a bit more money to sign other players, I'd regard these signings as no-brainers, but it seems our budget is spent.

Kone could easily prove me wrong and slot 14/15 and be a good all round player to boot and I'll hail him as a great bit of business though!

Not to fussed about the fee, but if that is his wages, that is scandalous....

Surely the cost of bringing those three in is way over this £6m figure? It's possibly closer to £10m with every cost accounted for (not that the extra costs wouldn't have been incurred with different signings, but still). I think Alcaraz and Robles were alright signings on the face of it, but for £5m I think we could have done a fair bit better than Kone, which is where the vast majority of the money (and £50k a week from now on, apparently) has gone.

Tbh, with all the talk of "world market" and Champions League football when RM came in, I thought we'd be "rolling the dice" a lot more, rather than playing it safe with arguably "proven" players from a poor Wigan side. While at times "playing it safe" arguably worked well for Moyes and he always had his "favourites", such as Neville, Osman, Hibbert, he was also capable of bringing in the exciting talents needed to compete at the top end of the league to go with them. That's what I want to see next from RM, unless he thinks he has all the talent he needs here and only needs to bulk up the squad, in which case good luck to him.

People love to group large numbers of posters' opinions into particular, convenient brackets for their dismissal and ridicule, so I will reiterate that I'm not having a go at RM, just expressing a bit of concern. I could still end up ecstatic with our transfer window in a month's time.

Kenwright brought up the Champions League.

As for doing better than Kone, who would you have bought ? We could have got another Michu, or we could have ended up with somebody like Bily. Instead Martinez went with a player who scored 11 goals in the Prem last season and is well versed in his play style.

I trust you won't take my word on that one lid! It's backed up by nothing other than what I've read on here. Others have said £35k, which would be sound, but £50k seems to be the amount most people are going with.

He did, yes, but RM still said "I'll get you Champions League". Great ambition, but imo not well backed up by his transfers.

Well I wanted Johnson last year for £10m and Moyes bought Kevin Mirallas for £5.3m, so that shows how much I know. From where I'm standing though, Kone seems like a less imaginative and exciting way to spend £5m, in the same way Johnson would have been. We need a boss slotter if we want to push up the league. Kone is a 29 year old okay slotter, by the looks of things.

Good luck finding one for £5m mate. Moyes already tried and seemingly failed with Jelavic.

I know Kone has a lot more to his game, but Beckford had similar goal stats in his first PL season... Just saying like...

It's not impossible. Michu was £2m and Hernandez was around £6m (off the top of my head). What we can't say with Kone is that we really tried.

Anyway, I'm not going to continue down this road as I'm not pessimistic about this season at all and don't want to sound like a doom merchant.

Michu had a great first season, let's see what the all important second season is like for him, before we use him as a barometer for all strikers...after all remember Jelavis first time out.

I like Kone - decent striker. Not convinced by Robles (Brennan - why did he barely play?). And i dont think Alcaraz improves us either. ('Wigans best centre half' er, great!)
Those two were cheap or free though, so not conplaining, but i'm certainly not doing cartwhweels over this summers recruitment so far. I think Norwich, Southampton, Swansea have all signed some better players than we have.

Robles ;'bareley played' because he was on loan as back up to El habsi...a good keeper. When El habsi was left out(injured?) Robles took his chance and played his EIGHT games for Wigan, including the Cup Final.

He even went off the boil in the 2nd half of the season. I rate him higher than Jelavic for sure but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he struggles a bit this season.
