I couldn't recall the name, but it was genuine home brew, straight out the keg. It really was good stuff.

If you happened to drink it sitting on a little plastic stool on a street corner while a thousand mopeds skimmed your arse it was probably bia hoi (or ho'i?), which is just a generic term for low-alcohol home brew in Vietnam. Sounds like you had a good brew if so, as its usually quite watery. Great atmosphere, though, and for that cost most things taste pretty good, especially when it's washing down a bowl of pho.

Just in BKK now....past week in Manila, Singapore, KL and here.

Not a fan of HCM at all...cant stand anything about it...will never return!

35 more sleeps until Bangkok / Chiang Mai / Ho Chi Minh / Hoi An. Can't wait. Bring on the warm weather, cheep beer and street food.

First person I've ever heard of with that opinion about HCM, but nice of you to be honest! What is it you didn't like? Would be good to hear mate.

Make that two. The common way to travel through Vietnam is to start at one end and work your way up/down. I started in the north and worked down, meaning HCM was one of the last places I saw before crossing over to Cambodia. It has a few places of interest, like the palace and opera house but lacks something in character. Certainly an anticlimax if you visit after seeing Hanoi.

I'm off to Morocco 3 weeks tonight. Got 19 days there over Xmas and New Year taking in Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Fes, Essouria and Meknes.

I just wish the sodding Moroccan FA would publish fixture schedules more than a week at a time, as it's impossible to plan my itinerary until the last minute. And we think we've got it bad with tv demands!

Nice to hear some opinions.

We're only there five days anyway, and the only goals I have are shopping (it's end of the three weeks we're there) and eating amazing Pho and Banh Mi, so it'll be sound.

I went there first ages ago, think we stayed in Hyatt just after it opened....of course that is a phenomenal hotel so all good inside.

Step outside onto the streets and be mesmerised by...well, nothing. Theres nothing there..the most bland Asian location ive ever been to. Terrible restaurants with poor service in every corner. The market sells the worst knock offs ive seen as well.

Went back 2 years ago...for business. Stayed in 4 different supposed 5* hotels...just LOL. People there are either total dummies or they have an agenda...we called them the "smiling assassins" trying to cheat you at every corner. Was there 3 months for that trip.

But actually both times i took girfriends after 2 days they also said "whats here, nothing to do".

Funniest part was going out partying on another trip with some South African contacts who happened to be there doing business as well...went out for drinks in an overpriced skybar...then clubbing. Took girls back to our rooms then had the hotel lobby call up telling us we werent allowed locals on the room unless married!!!

Funny cos when i went with the girlfriends they were stopped also (one filipino and one japanese) and askes to show room keys.

Such a non-entity of a place and weird rules.

Edit: just saw you want to go shopping there...couldnt find anything myself...other than one tailor after searching more than 20. But even that one was nothing compared to Japan/Singapore or Thai tailors.

Racking up the Asian countires now, me. Been North and South Korea, China three times, Thailand, and now on to Vietnam soon. Best continent on Earth by an absolute mile.

Oh Zat you're such a playboy. In many ways you're a perfect fusion of the wolf of Wall Street and Gary Glitter.

Tell us all about your North Korea trip! I'd love to visit, alas I doubt it'll ever happen
