One thing I'm coming to realise is that it's really difficult to do the simple things. Buying a train ticket for India Railway seems like a chore and a half.

Yes mate used the train quite regularly. Probably the easiest way to travel out there. As you mentioned in your other post the website is baffling but booking at stations is easy and English is spoken. Or you can pay a small commission and have a travel agent sort tickets for you.

A word of warning though - don't assume you can just turn up on the day and buy a ticket. The Indian people use the reservation system months in advance, so often popular trains sell out. Worth popping down to the station a few days early to sort trains if you're on a set schedule etc.
