In terms of prices in Rome, what are you looking at? Just back from Copenhagen which was very expensive (although could have done it on a budget if really wanted to). Is public transport the best way to get around?

Think Rome -> Palermo is doable, seems to be reasonably-priced flights operating that route in the summer.

Not sure what Copenhagen costs as a comparison point. We had saved up for a while for the trip, so didn't go too discount, though we tried to eat cheaper (pizza pizza pizza) most days and splurged once per city we visited. We did use the metro to get around and our hotel was located near the Termini station, where the two lines cross.

Need some help in deciding where I'm off to this summer! Planning on going for 10-14 days some time in July and need to get the ball rolling now before prices become extortionate. Pretty set on Italy - just not on whereabouts in Italy!

Going with my girlfriend and it's hard to agree on places. Ideally, we'd like to move around 2-3 separate cities. Original plan was Naples for 4 nights, Palermo for 7 nights but after doing a bit of research I've seen Naples is a bit boring and Palermo is a 5 day max.

She wants some sort of beach, I just want places to see and good food. Anyone got any advice on compromise? We aren't planning on renting a car, always prefer to use public transport abroad.

It's stating the bleeding obvious a bit, but it'll be fairly warm in Italy in July, so sightseeing in the middle of the day could well be a chore.

On the plus side, that means watching the world go by over a very leisurely lunch is the thing to do.

Rome's ace, as is Florence, but that pretty exhausts my knowledge of Italian cities.

I've never been, but I know people who have been to Sicily and loved it because it has culture and beaches in a relatively ( for Italy ) small area so they could mix and match dead easily.

They had a few days in Rome and then fly down to Sicily ( Palermo I think ? ) , bummed around Sicily for a week and then fly back to the UK

Think that's looking like my plan at the minute, only maybe the other way around (Palermo then Rome). Never been Italy so not sure what to expect really. Sorrento is another tempting option.

Would love to do Florence, Milan etc also but see them as more of a city break. Cheers mate.

Have gone to Jesolo for the last 9 summers and going again this year, 13 km beach and loads of very reasonably priced bars and restaurants. We usually fly into Venice and get the local bus to Jesolo, but this year we are flying to Bologna, train to Venice, local bus to Jesolo and weekend back in Bologna after our week at the beach. Transport in Italy is pretty cheap and usually very dependable.

@LocalNative just remember to validate your ticket before you alight...

Metro in Rome is pretty cheap (compared to London) and easy to get round on. Generally in Italy you can change trains/modes of transport on the same one-way ticket as long as you are going in the same direction (eg in Venice Bus > Bus/Tram etc). Singles are about e1.50 iirc.

I was there around July/August, 30s most days in Rome. Should be fine as long as you look after yourself and take the sensible precautions.

You two have got me looking at Sicily now haha. Need to book something soon for this summer, never leave it this late.

Palermo or Nice??

Have you considered Lake Garda and/or Lake Como? Cities such as Milan, Verona, Venice and Turin are close to either so you could easily combine city visits with beach/lakeside spells.

I was stationed in Vicenza for a few months in 1999 and can certainly vouch for Lake Garda and Verona. I've not been to Como myself but know plenty who have and they all rate it very highly.

i think @GrandOldTeam should look at the various travel threads in the Ale House and come up with something similar to the Amazon thing and sort out an affiliated link to Thomas Cook or something similar.
I did harrass him to do something like that years ago with Booking.com (also an information and accommodation page for expats and foreign fans coming to Liverpool).

Tallinn and Helsinki end of this month for 5 days, Vienna for a long weekend in June, Marrakesh for a long weekend in October and three and a half weeks in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia end of the year. Happy days.
