The whole set up needs to be examined, it's just not right that we should be performing so poorly on a consistent basis in international tournaments.

Even when we try to implement a passing game we look so uncomfortable and end up playing ourselves into trouble. The movement off the ball and interplay leaves so much to be desired, and the persistence of putting players like Harry Kane in the team is just bizarre (I'm assuming he was up there because he's big and strong?).

On a lighter note Barkley acquitted himself well throughout and was by far England's best player.

Irvine...ha!! Unless he's changed his ways, which tbf since the 10+ yrs ago I'm on about he may well have done, is or was a keen believer in the old school ways of big strong lads winning football matches at youth levels!

Total opposite now. He wants the youngsters to play total football and take away the must win attitude so football becomes second nature to them.

By some distance. Should have scored though.

Pointed out on Twitter that Iraq have been at war for years, and we got multi million pound soccer centres and kids on 10k a week.

Fair doo's then...

I remember the explanation a lot of yrs ago about who had made the cut and who hadn't. We can teach skill and make players technically better, we can't teach skillfull technical players to be more physical and stronger!

Glad his changed his views, especially as he's with our youth now!! Ha..

Because he's the only one playing football more regularly than the rest for his age.

The others went off with the under 21s.

You can. It's called going the gym.

It's fundamentally wrong. At least we'll be rid of Pearce and Taylor now, though it wouldn't surprise me to see the merry go round continue and the U21's end up with someone of Glen Roeder's ilk.

All this infrastructure is making no difference at all, we're so far behind the top tier of countries it's ridiculous.

The fact the under 20s have not won 1 single game in the world cup tournaments (Michael Owen scored ) for 13 years shows that things have rotting for a long time.

Seriously you think Barkley stood out head & shoulders above his team mates?
Fkin low standards you guys accept then. The others were dog****e mind.

Well yeah, I think it was more a height thing tbh.

Don't think messi, villa, Owen, xavi, inesta etc would of made it with him all those yrs ago. Now clubs/coaches etc are praying for players like them coming thru.

In England we'v only just realised the last few yrs how wrong we'v got it. I remember the whole Spanish thing starting back in the early nighties, its took them a long time to get where they are today. It's a long rd for England!

He definitely had far more to offer than the rest. I'd like to have seen him around players who were actually on his level.

Exactly this. Must be so hard playing with players of there quality when ur Barkley. In fact I know it is, from doing favours in my younger days playing for teams who were poo!
