I think one thing that a lot of people don't understand about New Orleans is that a large portion of the city is below sea level. I think the highest point in the city is about 20 feet above sea level. If the levees fail it's just a bowl waiting to be filled.

Humans have engineered the hell out of the Mississippi river to keep it mostly on its current course

We could really do with some of that rain here in California :(

I’m in East TN (Knoxville to be specific, which is just outside the highest risk area) where it’s pretty hilly and mountainous, so flooding here isn’t a major concern. Plus, we’ve been running at a rain deficit all summer, so a few inches over the next couple days could actually be useful. I really feel for everyone in the mid-state who had the devastating flooding last week and looks like they’re about to get squared up by the remnants of Ida as well.

It's overcast here and I've just made a cup of tea. She put a wash on which is mildly irritating, if she thinks I'm hanging it out she can go and take a running jump.
