No one was whining when we were going to spend £30mill on a 30 year old bench warmer from Arsenal called Oliver Giroud...

Bit of context.

Giroud plays a position where players often reach their best into their 30s. Few extra pounds come in handy for bullying CBs.

Speedy wingers on the other hand tend to fade when they lose that extra yard. Ryan Giggs being the exception. That’s the gamble with Walcott. Can he stay fit & has he still got a threat?

Bit of a difference in class though eh? Giroud is top drawer and has been for many years; Walcott has been inconsistent and injury prone.

That said, I have absolutely no problem with £20m for Walcott. That price is about right in this market, if not on the cheap side.

I'm using it as a counter argument to the "he's an old bench warmer" not worth the money.

Exactly.

Anyone want to name me a player who relied on pace and quick movement who played at the top level beyond 30?

There are lots of skill players, strikers and centre backs who have but barely any wide players.

People who have laid into Baines, Distin, Jags over the last few years for being "finished" don't seem to make the connection between their age and their pace "suddenly" going.

I'm fine with that. £20mill is change nowadays.

Far more accommodating than the £45mill we spent on another player who won't get much better. Or the £24mill we spent on a weak Dutchman

Robben was still scoring one every 2 games up to the age of 32.

If we get 2/3 good seasons from Walcott, i’d be happy with that.
