Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

You look at Vincent Kompany at City and see similarities. They look useless at times without his leadership and presence at the back , what's he 34/35?..

Think Silva could slot right in no problem. Don't think he will play every week though.

I thnk you could only judge a signing like Thiago Silva in the context of the overall business done in the window.

His age and wages are not going to look favourable, all other things being equal.

It could work out in the short-term, look at the job Richard Gough did. But then, look at Fabian Delph to date.

I wouldn't be against the signing on its own merits, but its one less position that can be filled by a much younger player that we potentially wouldn't have to replace for many years and/or might earn us a profit later. We really have to prioritise that model and make our transfer business self-sustaining.

Yeah thats my thinking - add the likes of Rabiot, Rodriguez and Allan to him and its a solid window of talent coming in whereas if its just loans like Zouma and punts like Hojberg from Southampton its underwhelming and feels like the funds aint there.

Keane has 2 years left on his deal - dont sell him this year we'll either have to lose him at a big loss or offer him a new deal which we dont want/need.

Sell Keane for £15-20 million and use the funds to bring in Gabriel to be Silva's successor.

Signing Silva is very 50/50 due to his age and wages but there is NO doubt he is a World Class player.

He has played 29 games in all competitions which is around 75% of all fixtures including 6 in Champions League.

He had missed 10 games all season through injury the longest out for was 20 days with a hamstring injury in February.

Argument over the level of Football in France but teams like Lyon, Lille, Monaco, Marseille and Rennes are way above the level of the half the Premier League plus regards Champions League, PSG have played Real Madrid and Dortmund with Silva playing.

He is a first teamer at PSG, he is a outstanding player who will give us a huge boost defensively and his leadership skills are World Class.

It's a no brainer. He will help Holgate develop into all round player, Keane will see how he reads the game and allow him to get experienced support around him and with Mina, he will be able to guide him into a better leader with greater man-managerment.

He will win the Champions League this summer and moonwalk into our starting 11.

My disappointment with Brands thus far is that we have not unearthed any young, relatively unknown talent that would already be attracting the attention of the elite teams. No one in two years.

I'm assuming any new signings will have the approval of Ancelotti so that is a much better safety net for us to have.

But I hope we don't go too full on down the road of the model of signing older players and/or those out of favour and not good enough for bigger clubs - I worry about the hunger of those players and their desire to be part of a true renaissance here.

Brands evidently likes signings from the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Man City, and now PSG perhaps. You can't say its worked to date.

I thought it was telling a comment Mourinho made rather casually before he took the Spurs job. He said we needed to find more Richarlisons. It's easy to say but he was right.

If we can get him on a free to fill a hole and be an influence around the place for a year or two then I'm all for it. Show Holgate, Branthwaite etc the ropes.

Yeah dont get me wrong im a big advocate of the signing of players in there prime (24-30) but you do have to be careful over which ones still have hunger and which ones are just going through the motions looking for a last pay day.

Tbf Silva does come across in terms of having big leadership and personality qualities which makes me think he's more a Coleman than a Schneiderlin but its still a question mark over whether he can come in and still be top quality over the course of a 38 game season.

Im still not completely convinced on either Holgate or Mina defensively as both have been part of a leaky defence so if Silva is the only CB incoming its a big risk we take on him handling the PL at 36 otherwise we are back to square one of our defensive options from last season.

My only hope is that we wanted 4 CB's last summer so maybe the thinking is what I said - sell Keane, bring in Gabriel/Todibo with the funds received alongside Silva on a free which gives us 4 options for the CB positions.

As always seems to be the case, there seems to be very vast differences in opinion as to how much money is available which means it's hard to really judge signings. That being if you take the sort of median position, which is we have funds to spend, but need to spend prudently due to FFP he ticks a fair few boxes as there will be no fee involved (and it may well be the signing on fee can be put onto other operating expenses).

I do see the Delph comparisons, and it's not to criticise Deplh, but Silva is levels above Delph. Delph even at his best was never world class. He was on or around the international team. He has 20 international, Gareth Barry got 53 and Barry was up against Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard and Hargreaves for most of his career.

I do understand people's desire for self sustaining business, but given the collapse in the market and the likely change in rules, that does become more difficult to predict as well.

Shiny expensive things are not what’s always best, it’s what fits the team

I remember the same people moaning that we bought Gueye from a relegated Villa, yet it was that bald tits best piece of business.

Statistically Gana was still one of the better defensive mids in the Prem for Villa which is why Walsh went for him being largely a stats man.

Hojberg just doesn't seem to have the stats or has shown to be putting in the performances for Saints to make me think he'll be dragging us into the top 6.

If Ancelotti wants him I'll be happy enough but when you have Saints fans not massively impressed and claim he's alright and the best of an average bunch I think it would be foolish to not listen considering they watch him every week.

It would be like Nice fans hearing our reviews on Schneiderlin but ignoring them as he once played for Man U and the France National Side.
