Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

Signing Silva is very 50/50 due to his age and wages but there is NO doubt he is a World Class player.

He has played 29 games in all competitions which is around 75% of all fixtures including 6 in Champions League.

He had missed 10 games all season through injury the longest out for was 20 days with a hamstring injury in February.

Argument over the level of Football in France but teams like Lyon, Lille, Monaco, Marseille and Rennes are way above the level of the half the Premier League plus regards Champions League, PSG have played Real Madrid and Dortmund with Silva playing.

He is a first teamer at PSG, he is a outstanding player who will give us a huge boost defensively and his leadership skills are World Class.

It's a no brainer. He will help Holgate develop into all round player, Keane will see how he reads the game and allow him to get experienced support around him and with Mina, he will be able to guide him into a better leader with greater man-managerment.

He will win the Champions League this summer and moonwalk into our starting 11.

GET IT DONE
he will most likely trip over the obligatory scarf that all newcomers wave about when he sign for us. Then Kenwright and Brands fall on top of him. That's him out for a few years. He will come back fighting fit at age 38 to partner Braithewaite. Holgate....Mina and Keane have moved on. He the gets injured in his first match. And retires.

Or he could be great for us.........who knows?

To have a winner/leader around the squad would make a massive difference as well. Ancelotti has spoken a lot about it being a squad game, about bringing players and in and out when it's best for the team. He's not going to play 40+ games and nor should he, but having him a there, keeping other players on their toes, and also being a role model to learn from, whether that be in training or playing alongside him, can only be a good thing, for Holgate, Gibson and Branthwaite especially.

With Silva there, it also gives extra cover, so Holgate could fill in in midfield as well, as he has proven capable before. This would also give the cover for Silva and Mina/Keane as well against the top sides.

Plus, Ancelotti knows him, trusts him, and if it's to be believed, wants him. This is not the same as Martinez/Etoo, as there is already a relationship of mutual respect. On a short term deal, I have no problem with it.

That's the spirit!

Good analysis.

How old was Vidic when he knocked it on the head n'all?

Vidic left United at 32, went to Inter and his legs went.
That dosent mean Thiago Silva's legs have gone because Vidic's went early.
Just like it means he will be great just because Gareth Barry was great at 36.

There is no exact formula to it, but he seems like a professional athletic type, so i'd edge closer to the he could do a year or 2 no problem

Koeman would have been very happy with this signing, I think he put Thiago Silva in a selection of his best current XI, though it was a few years back.

If this is a goer, you would of course have a concern about 36 year old playing in this league and the fact they havent done it before, that said defending is an art and you can make up ground and space with your mind and positioning as you can with your pace and athleticism. Im always reminded of Weir and Stubbs both played their best stuff well into their 30's.

Ill re-frame this a little instead of thinking this is a temporary fix, i think what we might be buying is time and space, this strikes me as a show of confidence in Branthwaite and Gibson, who are a year maybe two of developing being first team options.

Why put a 25 mill signing in their way. Nothing is cast iron with those two admittedly, but in the current climate Silva for a year or two means we can focus whatever limited funds on central midfield and the right flank and reevaluate next summer based on Brantwaithe and Gibson's progress.

Thats the decision as i see it and that will be up to Carlo and Brands in terms of player development and squad development.
I thought something similar when I heard it first.
Branthwaite and in particular Gibson may not see too many ways to progress into the team if we are bringing in expensive young signings. It would be a statement from the manager that he doesn't see them as the future.

Signing a player for a year or two would be a clear signal to the younger players that he is waiting for them to build up experience over a relatively short time frame.

Leaders eh.

We've had four or five international or former captains in the starting 11 in recent years (thinking of the days Williams, Rooney, Klaassen former Ajax Captain etc) and been turd.

Only one of them has been proven to be a winner and to be fair, Rooney's legs had absolutely gone. Could always see his brain was ticking way ahead of what his legs could do. Always a chance with Rooney of his legs going considering how fast he was at once point while being powerful.

It's not asif Silva has relied on a burst of pace or maintained pace.

again, the question for me is Keane or Silva. Much rather have Silva in for a season or two, sell Keane if we can and re-invest elsewhere or into a younger centreback who could learn from Silva and grow into the XI. All easier said than done ofcourse.

It does not have to be either though does it. There are other options

What happened to all the other centre halfs in world football?

Not that I'm against Silva signing, just not convinced on the "he's a winner/leader" Fabian Delph/Wayne Rooney argument as the key reason to sign him.

It's those attributes combined with his quality for me that. I wouldn't just sign Silva personally, if we can get a younger one in too great. However i do think Silva may provide a good option which allows us to spend money elsewhere.

I do get your point though mate.
