It would be interesting to see how much of a signing on fee we would have to waft in front of Silva to get him here.
I don't want to trust the manager. I want the DOF to do his job.
And maybe he is. But it feels a little off with all the other Brands signings.
Branthwaite is far enough away that we could sign someone who actually has a chance at having a future and by the time Branthwaite is ready for the first team we will have seen enough of that signing plus Keane, Mina and Holgate to decide who to keep. A stopgap isn't necessary. Its really not though if you think about it.
Brands brings in young talent like Branthwaite. Branthwaite is not ready for the first team just yet so we need a stopgap player to hold us over until Branthwaite (and Gibson) are ready to play every week.
The manager has to have some form of input. I'm sure Brands could go out and identify a good week in week out player of the right age for us to sign but that totally negates the point of signing the younger players as it blocks their progress into the first team. Each situation if different.
It's almost like Utd signing Laurent Blanc at the end of his career as a stop-gap before signing Rio Ferdinand for the long term. Makes sense to me signing him short term until we find a longer term player. I think signing him will also raise the profile of the club. Its really not though if you think about it.

There are some very important differences between where United were in 2001 and where we are right now. It's almost like Utd signing Laurent Blanc at the end of his career as a stop-gap before signing Rio Ferdinand for the long term. Gough was really good for a sustained period compared to Eto'o so not sure what the point is here? For every Sam Eto’o there is a Richard Gough
What happened to all the other centre halfs in world football?
Not that I'm against Silva signing, just not convinced on the "he's a winner/leader" Fabian Delph/Wayne Rooney argument as the key reason to sign him.
People were using the same logic with Delph, not that they necessarily are in the same class of being successful.I'm confuzzled as to how Delph and Silva are being compared. One's led a successful team for years. The other is loud and came off the bench.
