Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

Honestly I feel like you are moaning for moanings sake here although I get what you are saying there are reasons to be optimistic about the prospect.

Of course the manager is going to have a say on a player he knows. He will have links to him, more than likely still keeps in touch with him and will know where is up to in terms of if he can still perfom. This is one of the best managers on earth we are talking about here. Its one player and he would more than likely come in and be his captain for a year or two.

The risk is lessened purely from what I have just said there. It's not a blind signing.

Age is used far too much these days as a reason not to sign players. If you are good enough you are young enough etc.

Zlatan was a success for United, even our very own Phil Jagielka was of a decent standard until his last year here when he was what, 35? And he wasn't as good as Silva was. Sheringham and Giggs went up to their 40s. Holebas of Watford is 35 and I think he still plays well too.

We also still have two pretty young cenre backs in Mina (always struggling to stay fit) and Holgate, Keane is still an England international (somehow) and Branthwaite is coming through. A player like Silva is ideal to bridge that gap whilst Branthwaite develops more whilst still being able to offer experience and leadership (which we do lack) to the first team.

We can still sign other players.
We can sign others but we don't have unlimited resources.

I'm pretty consistent about the targets I think we should be going for so no not really moaning for moanings sake. I don't like this move.

The fact that you're using Sheringham and Giggs as examples kind of shows how rare it is. Jags was fine, but he clearly lost a step after what, 2015?

That's kind of my point. If we're getting 70% of peak Thiago Silva, how good is that?

I suspect there’d be less polarising views if we’d signed some other people before this possible deal.

Probably right. Hell even less polarising views if we signed an 'upcoming' CB alongside him. Would create a sort of balance of it.

I always love the people who are like "Oh no, we've saved money instead of spending like drunken sailors, Im concerned about what this says about our finances".

Greatly overspending for players doesnt say anything good about a teams finances, it just says they wont have any in the near future.

I am far from convinced, but surely one of these older players we keep signing has to pay off. As long as it is a short term deal and a performance related package it might help while we are short-handed and seemingly struggling to land our main targets.

I cant stand Rooney but he was one of our better players in a terrible year.
Plus Rooney has the profesionalism of ...........well someone not very profesional
33 year old in a 42 year olds body

He was so bad we were farming him round the MLS to try and get his wages off the books after 10 months.

People genuinely want us to have a net spend of £150m every year and think that’s somehow sustainable for a club the size of Everton.

Im ok with this, not over the moon as I would prefer Gabriel. But, can understand it, centre back isnt our weakest position, no one knows how the market is going to go, currently it looks like selling clubs still retain power asking mega money for average players. So, to sign a player on a free to offer cover and something younger players can learn from while we strengthen else where, makes sense to me.

Oh no I never believe Eto would take us up a level but add some experience and quality which he did. Had we had a manger with a bit more about him and less stubbornness towards changing his system I think we would have seen more of those players we had at that time.

He still had class though, gave us the ability to hold the ball in tight areas. The spine of Stones, Barkley and Lukaku should have been enough to see us move up a level.

Relating it to Silva; on a short term deal I see no issues. Has he ever had pace? Really? Probably not a lot. He can only be a positive influence on Holgate who has improved but may need that guidance to go another level. Then you ask the question, Keane or Silva? I know my choice. It’s nothing personal against Keane, he seems a good guy and has been brave to come out regarding getting therapy, but he isn’t good enough for me. He’s slow as well so I’d much rather have Silva for a season.

I get people’s concerns regarding will he be as solid here in a faster league. That’s completely fair, the answer is none of us know. The age is a concern and giving him more than a year or two at a time would be a concern. Absolutely fair.

However he will bring a winning mentality, experience, quality and leadership. All four we have perhaps been in lacking in. For all we know this may mean we can spend money in midfield and then a year or two down the line we have had time to bring in a centre back to take over. We may sign two centre backs. We don’t know.

CA has won the European cup five times, 3 time’s as a manager. If he thinks Silva’s quality and experience despite his age will give us a stronger presence for the near future. We have to trust him. We all love Everton (apart from one or two who clearly try to bash the club at any point), we all want what’s best but this isn’t Koeman, Martinez or Silva. This is a man who is a proven winner and respected as much as anyone in football . We have to trust his judgement on signings like this. He will be brought in for very specific attributes that we are lacking. Leadership is one of them as we don’t have a single player that demands respect and will assert authority. I love Coleman for his loyalty, his passion, and we all love him for his ‘humble background’ as he comes across as he’s just one of us who happens to be a very good footballer. So I think he’s a leader on the pitch though? Probably not.

Just my LONG But thought out take on the potential signing.

On and also to mention the bigger picture of club profile. He would boost our profile. Other players will take note, other players may come because of it. That’s the non-footballing perspective too!
Got my doubts regarding his age but great analysis and you have convinced me

36 is really steep but he is/was a top draw player and a natural born leader I was hoping we wouldn't go back to these big name players who are coming to the end of the career but if it was for 1 year only I mean why not..If Baines can do it then Silva certainly can.

If Carlo wants him, that’s more than enough for me.

Whoppers acting like he’ll play 38+ games & his legs will fall off cos he’s 36. Being around the squad to bring leadership & manage his conditioning accordingly, all going well we will have Gabriel, Mina, Holgate & Silva to choose from.

Only worry for me is that Silva can’t be our only signing at CB, I’d rather not sign a RB & play Holgate there if needed
