This is where you run into the form vs class argument. Martinez’s first season was an outrageous balance of good defenders and attackers, linked well by the midfield. As time went on he trained the good defending out of the team, so it became a whole that was less than the sum of its parts.
This most recent good run was purely a result of the coach utilising what he had to work with, to the very best of their collective ability. There’s no doubt at all that the coaching we have now is light years ahead of what we had then. Long story short: I’d kill for those players and this coach.
