This season vs Martinez 13/14 season

That's how we compare with the 13/14 season, we're only 2pts off where we were then (which we averaged the 2pts/game ratio at that point). That season was an odd one in that our points tally any other season would be 3rd or even 4th.

I posted the below on another thread the other day, showing how we compare against our top 10 PL seasons (38 games comparison). I think we're on par with the 07/08 and 13/14 seasons, so hopefully 65-70 points as a target.

Martinez was / is a comedian, but that didn't stop 13/14 being awesome - no point being a football fan if you're not going to enjoy the wins. Moyes had gone stale, change felt good and we were winning big games. But you could tell at the time we were riding our luck, and that regression to the mean was inevitable. Roberto has some unusual gifts, though, and managed to take us way past the mean and into the cellar. Down amongst the dead men.

Good point of comparison is the mid 80s side - in my memory they won a lot of games 1-0 or 2-1, but it was absolutely night and day to Martinez' outfit in 13/14. Those sides were granite strong and you never felt like they were 'lucky' to win by a goal, or on a hot streak, they were just a great team. Different gravy with 13,14 - it was fun but you knew it couldn't last.

13/14 was certainly enjoyable, I had just moved to Germany so only got to a couple of games live and one of them was the Arsenal game. That game Martinez changed the system slightly and Arsenal were surprised and completely outplayed. However, this was the only time where you thought that Martinez had the longevity factor. Stubborn to the point where somebody who had only ever watched one game of football could see where things needed to change, in the subsequent seasons.

So, in conclusion, at the time it was an amazing season but in hindsight there was no sustainability. This season is highlighting this more and more, a coupe of marquee signings and every game Ancelotti is adapting to the situation, imagine if we had as many injuries as we have had this season, Martinez does not have the ability to adapt to that, we would have finished mid table at best.

Using Hindsight, this season is much better as we will have ups and downs but it feels right. Ancelotti has the demeanour of a man who has a plan for every scenario and if he doesn't have a plan then he will figure it out within a few games at most.

I joined GOT that season, it was that good I just had to talk about it.

I've been off GOT since... until this season, which is that good I just have to talk about it.

We had some side under The Phenomenal One, and good squad depth, and performed to the quality. This year, whilst we have the quality from certain individuals, I think in general the squad isn't as accomplished and on the whole we are overperforming under a more pragmatic brand of footy (testimony to the class of Carlo). Next year will be when we crack out the sexy football in abundance
Talk when we're winning. You only talk when we're. Talk when we're wiiining. You only talk when we're winning.

The 13/14 was a very exciting season. We'd had a decade of dour performative football without any real sucess.

That first season under Martinez we played some fantastic football and had our first 20+ goalscorer for a generation.

Ultimately under Ancelloti we will push on and surpass any achievement we've made in a long while but that 13/14 season was very enjoyable.

Sadly not all, there was a lot of triumphant ‘I told you so’ when we beat Southampton 3-0 away at the start of his third season. Apparently now that he’d bought Cleverly, Kone was back fit, and he had moved out the loser Moyes players then it was all going to work.
Remember when his big marquee signing the summer he was sacked was set to be El Mohamady? lol

The only times as an Everton fan that I would go to games expecting to win no matter who we were playing. Even under Carlo I don't get that confidence going into games, hopefully that changes.

Got to give it to Moyes, that 02/03 and 04/05 points tallies for the team we had at the time were brilliant.

Odd that I don’t see Allardyce’s much vaunted 8th place on 49 points anywhere in here.

2013/14 season:

Barry's saving tackle against Chelsea and then sweeping past them
bossing United the champions of England in their own back yard and getting the win
camped out in Arsenal's half at the Emirates playing them off the pitch
roaring back into the Goodison derby and frightening the life out them

This team has a long way to go before they show that level of bravura performance.

We played better football in 2013/14 but we have a better quality of player this season

We got knocked out of the League Cup in the third round that season, we made the quarters this

We got to the FA Cup quarters that season, all being well we have a chance of matching that at minimum if we turn up against Sheff Weds and Spurs or Wycombe

We relied heavily on Lukaku’s goals that season, we are banking heavily on DCL’s goals this season
You are correct in your assertion that Martinez's team played good , better football than Carlos in his 1st season but that we have better players now.

We have played some decent stuff this season but latterly have been defensively solid and ground out results.

There is no doubt in my mind, however , that with everyone fit and with an additional or two Carlo's team will play good progressive football AND be successful.
