This season vs Martinez 13/14 season

Got to give it to Moyes, that 02/03 and 04/05 points tallies for the team we had at the time were brilliant.

Odd that I don’t see Allardyce’s much vaunted 8th place on 49 points anywhere in here.
The 12/13 season, lowest amount of losses but crippled by too many draws. That could have been another season were we finished top 4. Newcastle at home springs to mind were big Vic scored a late goal and then we conceded one straight away to draw.

Also with the 02/03 season we were top 3 for a while, I remember we just kept winning games 1-0 at one point and scoring last minute equalisers, but come Spring time I think we just fell off a cliff and crawled over the line. Steve Watson, Campbell and Radzinski bagging most of our goals. Only finished 1 point off 6th and 5 off the RS in 5th.

Thats probably the most annoying Everton game I’ve seen in a while. We absolutely dismantled them. They scored from Osman slipping over and Howard being beaten too easily, and then a long ball that bounced between two centrebacks from a free kick by their corner flag.

If Moyes had kept the Heitinga Distin pairing that finished the season before (when Heitinga was player of the season) we might have turned a few more of those draws into wins. Distin and Jags were both top recovery defenders so worked really well when paired with a Lescott or Heitinga who attacked the ball. When paired together they occasionally would just let a cross bounce in the box or let someone run right through the middle after leaving it for each other. Never felt fully secure with that partnership.

Got robbed out of that 6th spot on the last day against United, then had to watch them lift the title on our turf

Everton in 1996 was the best team I've known in the Premier League era. The 2nd half of 95-96 Kanchelskis was unplayable and we finished 2 points off 4th and this was mainly down to a poor start. We then added Speed and Barmby to that squad and we had a great start to 96-97 then unfortunately Hinchcliffe and Parkinson got injured Kanchelskis left and it all fell apart.

I think we played more entertaining football that season, but this season is more tactically sound. Martinez inherited a stronger team than Carlo, yet we’re still better off now.

Even Moyes said it needed breaking up. The average age of the team was pretty high.

Martinez first season was brilliant. A few things I remember.

Going to the Emirates and absolutely bossing a wenger team in possession.

Losing 2-1 at half time against Liverpool and Bobby taking a defender off for del boy. We ripped them to bits in the 2nd half absolutely pummelled them. A side that lost the league by a point

It did, but it was also a mentally tougher, well drilled team built with one vision in mind. Thats the opposite of what Carlo i herited - a mishmash of players brought in by multiple different managers, no structure and no spine.

I agree. Moyes was a turd in so many ways, but he had players scouted out and their characters were sound.

Unfortunately, a by-product of that appears to have been loyalty to him rather than anyone who succeeded him...which came to the fore when they hit the first bump in the road under Martinez a third of the way through his second season here.

It has honestly been a sickness in our squad ever since. They down tools whenever the going gets hard, so far Carlo has been the only manager to seemingly turn that trend. I though Silva mightve gotten to the problem when he got us out of that autum slump we were in during his first season and he still had us finishing strong-ish, but they did it again the season after.

Players are canny. They also know they had/have an owner who is impetuous and not prepared to back a manager to the hilt.

All depends were we finish.
I know it has split many blues, but that 1st Martinez season is my best/fav following us in my life. First full season 1992z
That Arsenal game where RM moved big Rom out on the right wing and we smashed them is one of my best Everton memories. I really though it was a turning point for us.
