This season vs Martinez 13/14 season

The football this season has been great at times but, way too often, terrible at other times. I mean just awful football sometimes.

I recall that Martinez season being a lot more fun but I'm guessing supporters being in the stands had a lot to do with that.

I don't think I was ever so optimistic with Everton as after that Arsenal match tho..

That arsenal game at the Emirates gets better in people’s heads by the day. What was in truth a very confident, accomplished, performance which got a deserved draw against a team that finished one place above us in the league has somehow become a game in which we played the best team in the world off the park and were cruelly denied by incredibly bad luck.

We had some better performances at the Emirates under Moyes than that one but again didn’t win. The Pienaar chip to go 2-1 up, we really should have won about 3 or 4 -1 that day and was a far more complete performance.

There was some awful football people have forgotten from 13/14 also. Sunderland away was terrible, Cardiff, Liverpool away obviously, Palace at home. We were willing to overlook them because the results over the whole season were good but even towards true end people had started saying that something wasn’t right in the team.

Carlo seems to operate in a ridiculous climate now where even when he wins he’s done it the wrong way or he’s criticised for an unsustainable way of winning, his away record is down to there being no fans but he still had to take the flak if we drop points at home without the same excuse. God forbid he drops a single point at any given moment.

I’ve never known an Everton manager be 4 points off the top of the league in January of his first full season, be one behind Liverpool, still in the FA Cup, yet only be one loss away from some on what’s going absolutely mental about it and questioning if we have the right manager.

We would have got top 4 too if we had the side that started September for the first 3 games. Played Norwich, Cardiff and West Brom and drew all 3 with Jelavic up front and felt like Martinez was just filling gaps until the end of the window. Then was no surprise we had our worst form in January away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs without Lukaku. Think everyone got sucked in by that 6/7 match winning run in March/April when it felt like we couldn’t lose, until we did to Pulis at home

We played much better stuff in the 13/14 season. Stones was sublime, the full backs Coleman and Baines were the best combo in the league. I'll always remember the Arsenal away game, a fantastic game, i really thought we would finish fourth, we fell away in the last month, Palace at home killed us, the injury to McCarthy probably ruined our chances.

This year is just weird, i think we are playing pretty poorly but hard to beat. We are winning loads by the odd goal and relying on set pieces, i don't know if that's sustainable, but we can definitely improve when we have a full team back. It's anybody's guess we could easily finish top 4 if we improve or 10th.

We only lost to Palace at home because Martinez got arrogant and thought we could win without McCarthy in the team. There was just no need for it, we got overran, conceded loads, and as soon as he came on we scored and got back on top. We could have won that game and got CL if it wasn’t for his stupid desire to tinker with a team that had won 7 in a row.

I guess I have blinders on because I genuinely don't recall them that much.

And I'm not trying to say Carlo is the reason we play poorly, just simply that this year we've seen performances that are as bad as anything under Silva or even BFS.

Which ones though because we were getting punted for 4 5 and 6 goals under Koeman, Silva, Allardyce (regularly). The worst performance in my eyes under Ancelotti was Wolves away last season 3-0. This season though, even the worst losses like Southampton away and United at home are nowhere near those types of defeats. Getting edged by West Ham or Leeds by a single goal, as annoying as it is, is nowhere near the same level of performance. We’ve played badly this season at times but it’s a different level.

Yeah, that's fair. Could be simply that the bad ones stick in my head as they are more fresh.

Martinez's first season was ridiculous, some of the football was incredible and we battered some of the better teams in the league.

It's the most excited I've ever been to go to the match.

The season after was proper Everton.

Thats probably the most annoying Everton game I’ve seen in a while. We absolutely dismantled them. They scored from Osman slipping over and Howard being beaten too easily, and then a long ball that bounced between two centrebacks from a free kick by their corner flag.

If Moyes had kept the Heitinga Distin pairing that finished the season before (when Heitinga was player of the season) we might have turned a few more of those draws into wins. Distin and Jags were both top recovery defenders so worked really well when paired with a Lescott or Heitinga who attacked the ball. When paired together they occasionally would just let a cross bounce in the box or let someone run right through the middle after leaving it for each other. Never felt fully secure with that partnership.

Often forgotten about that season. The midfield was tremendous in large parts and when Heitinga and Distin were together it was also one of the most balanced sides we've had. Just nowhere near ruthless enough.

The main problem with the 12/13 team for me was the defence. Too many times we conceded in the last 10 minutes (quite a few in injury time) turning the wins into draws or draw to defeat. Just looked and we lost 11 points that season due to this which would’ve had us 4th if we’d had saw games out.
Guess can be looked at both ways in the defence being better in closing games out or having that Lukaku striker up top to put the game beyond the opposition. As majority of the time the truth will lie somewhere in the middle.

For that one season we had the Moyes defensive resilience and a scintillating attack; I’ll always remember it very fondly.

This time around I think our expectations of the club, in part due to the fact we have a few bob now, are higher and so it doesn’t have that same magic feel to it, but this (in hindsight after seeing what came after Bobby’s first season) feels more sustainable, like it’s the start of a gradual progression into potential challengers. As a one-off season, unless we crack top 4, I can’t see this one matching that.

Didn’t he start every single attacker we had fit basically? Basically a 424 with Barkley as one of the 2
