Titanic Tourist Submarine Goes Missing

They knew the drill when they got into that thing.

Hard for me feel too arsed about the fate of a couple of billionaires if I’m being brutally honest.

Interesting to see this is getting more prominent coverage compared to the migrant boat that went down last week..,
I feel sorry for the loss of any life ( if that is how this ends) but the point that you make in the final paragraph is spot on

It seems it has over half a dozen mechanisms to return it to the surface, including a final failsafe weight that releases on a timer after 14 hours, so there is reason to hope its surfaced, but there are innumerable ways for this thing to go south.

Terrible situation, but very unnecessary. I get that this company are saying they're using billionaire money to fund some scientific research but it feels a tenuous link for a thrill seeking/bucket list exercise with colossal risk.

The whole thing has now been mapped, digitised and is now constantly degrading.
I can't help thinking the site should be left in peace without significant scientific justification to go there.

But what mechanisms were these? It has no actual ballast tanks on the sub itself, they are on a different platform. I have heard people say they can use balloons but how are they inflated, where are they stored, at what depth do they work and at what pressure? They were operating in over 3800 meters of water. They would need a hell of a system that works at greater than 380 bar to work that deep. What’s the failsafe weight, how would that work?
