Just remembered Ajax took Ryan Babel back after his spell at Liverpool (and some time in Germany IIRC?).

Why wouldn't they be interested in doing the same thing with Heitinga after his spell at Everton?

I think there's a decent chance they would want Heitinga, and i think he'd jump at the chance to go back if they offered him good wages. They sold him for about £9m 5 years ago so to get him back for a £2m or so wouldn't be a bad deal for them. You never know!

Signing Alderweireld doesnt necessarily mean we are going 3 back. Distin is 36, Jagielka is 30, Duffy isnt ready and i dont think Stones is ready for the PL just yet. Alderweireld is only 24. Distin has one season left in him in my opinion so Toby ultimately replaces Distin long term.

Wages would be the main issue with Heitinga going the other way.

Even if we offloaded Heitinga and he took a pay cut to go there, how much you wanna bet we'll have the pay the difference in wage until his contract would've been up with us. One of the few ways I see this working out...
